You know you're supposed to like him, but you just don't. Maybe it's the authoritarianism, maybe it's the arrogance, maybe it's the views he seems to hold, maybe it's the way that he drones on and on until you're falling asleep. Well ... you're not the only one. None of that is new. Not even the last bit (see Acts 20:9).
But there's a secret to liking an initially unlikeable person like Paul: walk a mile in his moccasins. Or three. This small book aims to take you inside three controversies that Paul faced. Would you have advised him to do anything differently? Would you have done as well as he did? This is a quick and entertaining introduction to the letters of Paul, from which you'll also learn about yourself.

"The warmth of this book thaws the awkward frostiness that currently exists around Paul... I like him more now. And I like this book a lot." Jeff Lucas, author, speaker, broadcaster

"This is a gem of a book for individual or group study; I highly recommend it." Mike Pilavachi, Soul Survivor

"Conrad Gempf is an exceptional communicator and a sideways thinker. He's also effortlessly cool. What he uncovers about Paul will surprise, entertain and challenge you." Martin Saunders, editor of Youthwork Magazine

Fresh Air
By Darian Burns
Academics, seminarians, Theologians, and all that like hanging with those guys, stay away from this book. You will hate it. It is witty, practical, coherently written and treats Paul not as a subject to be dissected but a man to be understood. I will be shocked if this book does not receive some fairly blistering reviews because it is art more than text and most Christian intellectuals simply miss the point. It is relational rather than theological and personal rather than impersonal. It is alive rather than dead.

If you want Paul to come alive within you get this book and devour it. If you want a discussion of NT Wrights view of justification atonement verses a traditional reformed view, go to the library.

Highly recommended for novice Bible readers
By Steve P
I completely understand why people are rating this book 5 stars. I think it is a must read for anyone new to reading/interpreting the Bible (particularly the Pauline letters) so they avoid flat fundamentalist proof-text readings of the texts. The author takes an excellent approach to hermeneutics and exegesis and does it in very plain, conversational language. For me, personally, however, the style irritated me - I felt like it was a bit forced at times trying to make it conversational and simple. So please don't misunderstand me - the 3 stars is my rating for myself. I liked the book but didn't love it. However, I highly recommend it for someone new to the Bible or who have been "infected" with simplistic approaches to it. If a reader is already knowledgeable about appropriate approaches to interpreting ancient texts and arrived at a historico-grammatical reading of the text, they would probably be a bit bored with it. So - highly recommended as an introduction to responsible reading of the Pauline letters!

They Flew into Oblivion: The Disappearance of Flight 19, by Gian J. Quasar

In 2005 a national spotlight was placed upon a mystery of aviation because of They Flew into Oblivion. Having an early and still-unfinished copy of the manuscript, Larry Landsman, SCI-FI Channel's determined Special Projects Director, pushed for a special documentary to be produced by NBC News Productions and then lobbied Congress through Podesta-Matoon, the nation's third largest and influential lobbyist, for formal recognition of the subject of this book in Congress. This culminated in a Resolution in Congress sponsored by Republican E. Clay Shaw of Florida, which passed overwhelmingly on November 17 at 420-2 votes. This recognition was unique in that it honored 14 US Navy airmen who had vanished 60 years before. They were not war heroes. Nor were they on some crucial mission. The war had been over for months, and the flight was merely on a routine training run off the east coast of Florida. The total disappearance of the "Lost Squadron," "Lost Patrol" or, as it is most frequently called, Flight 19, was a bizarre case if for nothing more than the very number of aircraft that vanished. Paradoxically, however, little is known of the actual incident and the 14 aviators who vanished. Rather than being subjected to serious journalism as in the case of Amelia Earhart or Glenn Miller's disappearance or the destruction of the Hindenberg, Flight 19 became buried in the popular enigma of the "Bermuda Triangle." Any recounting of it was but a vignette designed to link it with the many others that had vanished. Author Gian J. Quasar, the man considered the leading expert in the world on the Bermuda Triangle, however, pulls the flight from the Triangle's clutches to reveal it as a military blunder, a tragedy and an irony. Like an absorbing detective read, They Flew into Oblivion leads the reader through the case and its aftermath and then follows the author on his solution of its mystery and his search for its final resting place. The result is to lay bare the incident once and for all. The trail stops at a federal refuge that will allow no examination of its contents for fear it might disturb the alligators . . . and for fear Flight 19 is indeed inside.

From the Back Cover
"The danger of Gian J. Quasar's fascination with mysteries often assigned to 'paranormal causes' is that readers will assume his writing is tainted with secret advocacy and bias-- like the majority of hacks who litter this field. Readers, rest easy. Quasar is a superb writer and researcher, and stands alone at the top of this unusual field. Through Quasar, the genre is elevated (finally!) to equal, even exceeds, the highest standards of investigative journalism, and he has the rare ability to distill complex data into lucid declarative sentences-- I can give no higher praise. Quasar's THEY FLEW INTO OBLIVION is not only the best book by far on the iconic Flight Nineteen, it serves as the gold standard, in my opinion, for readers and future writers who seek to explore the complex facts (which make a mystery no less wonderful) rather than soothe their biases with fairy tales."

Randy Wayne White (author Doc Ford series for Putnam)

The disappearance of Flight 19 is infamous. Five large Navy torpedo bombers simply
cannot vanish from the face of the earth on a routine patrol and leave no trace. Yet even
65 years later no answer has ever come to explain this bizarre event. Despite
comprehensive underwater mapping in search of every piece of the ill-fated Challenger
space shuttle no trace has ever come of Flight 19. Countless wrecks have been
catalogued and dived, but the tragic Flight 19 remains elusive. Yet all these years the
official theory has been that Flight 19 merely vanished off the east coast of Florida on
a dark night and left no trace.

The legend of Flight 19 grew until it gave birth to the enigma of the Bermuda Triangle.
The legend has Flight 19 swept away by other-worldly forces, remaining forever in
limbo over an unforgiving Atlantic.

Gian J. Quasar shows otherwise. Recognized as the foremost authority in the world on
the Bermuda Triangle, Quasar paradoxically pulls Flight 19 from the Triangle's clutches,
and the chain of events and the facts he uncovers support his conclusion: Flight 19
disappeared over land. After reading this true investigative detective story the reader
will understand why it inspired a Resolution in Congress and why the largest high tech
search in modern history followed the author's trail to a land that time forgot.

About the Author

Gian J. Quasar has achieved international acclaim for his serious investigation of world mysteries. For this subject-- Flight 19-- his work inspired a Resolution in Congress, which passed overwhelmingly at 420-2 votes. He is regarded as the world authority on The Bermuda Triangle, but he has channeled the meticulousness of 'investigative history' at many topics often eschewed by academia--Bigfoot, UFOs, True Crime/Cold Case files. He has been a guest on hundreds of radio shows and the subject of over 30 documentaries on the History Channel, Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, NBC, SCI-FI, Fox, TLC, BBC, National Geographic Explorer, and many others.

Flight 19: Seperating Fact from Fiction
By Andy
Anyone with even a passing interest in the so-called 'Bermuda Triangle' will have heard of Flight 19 - five US Navy aircraft that disappeard on a routine training exercise in December 1945. Over the years since then, a great deal of hype and outright fabrication has been written and said about this tragic event. Here, for the first time, author Gian Quasar sets the record straight by exposing the exaggeration and fantasy peddled by others.

If you're looking for tales of aliens, sea-monsters, or intervention by the inhabitants of Atlantis, then this is not the book for you. Instead, Quasar presents a sober, detailed investigation of the known facts (the fruits of his 10-year+ research),... More >using the original Board of Inquiry findings, personal interviews with surviving relatives of Flight 19, plus others who were involved at the time. The picture that emerges is one of initial skepticism on the part of shore-based Naval personnel that Flight 19 could have gotten lost on such a simple exercise, leading to shocking instances of incompetence in the efforts to bring the Flight home.

To use the well-worn cliche, at times the book reads like a novel. Quasar puts the reader right there in the cockpit with the doomed airmen, helped greatly by the biographical details he provides along the way. In this, he succeeds in putting a very human face on what was hitherto a largely anonymous tragedy. Even the most detached of readers will not fail to be moved as they contemplate the fear and anxiety that must have flown with those men, watching their slowly dwindling fuel supplies run out.

Where did Flight 19 fall to earth that fateful night? The popular notion is that they ditched in the sea, somewhere in the Bahamas. As another reviewer has stated, however, Quasar theorizes that they came to rest in the Okefenokee swamp in southern Georgia. However implausable that may seem to anyone reading these words now, my advice is simple - read the book! There you will find, not idle speculation, but reasoned, documented evidence to show exactly how this scenario is not just possible, but highly probable. You may have read several books on this mystery. How many mentioned the radar reports of an unidentified flight of five aircraft in northern Florida/southern Georgia? These came from an aircraft carrier, the USS Solomons, and from both Jacksonville, Florida and Brunswick, Georgia. Does it seem so implausable now?

Actively pursuing evidence of his theory, Quasar travels to the Okefenokee in search of help and information. I wonder how many readers will be as disgusted as I was, at the attitude of the Federal officers who 'protect' this area. The airmen of Flight 19 were Navy fliers - most of them veterans of the war, who had served their nation bravely on land or at sea. Their final resting place deserves to be verified and recognized, but it seems, to paraphrase the author, "no one must disturb the alligators."

Unless a ground-swell of public opinion changes this attitude, that bland statement may well prove the final irony of this tragic case. Read the book, and decide for yourself if you should add your voice to the outrage.

By Jim Carone--Capt.
Stiffback-6x9-253 pages-28 pages of b/w photos.-19 chapters. Deals with the theory that the flight does not rest in the ocean. Pretty strong evidence put forth. Really enjoyed this as a fresh look into this mystery, but also saddened me. Plus I still want to know why no one has found the Mariner yet as the location is pretty well established on her. Any takers? Really a good book. highly recommended. Hope this helps, cap.

well researched and well written
By Brent David Schroeder
I have read several books on this story and I will say, this has to be the best one on the sugject, if your into this story. A lot of research had to be done to put this book together, along with a lot of time to try and explain a long time mystery. It was a easy read and I would probably buy his other books if they are as well put together as this one.

A Good How - it's - Done Expose'
By Robert C.
Huston's book is short, funny, illustrated and clearly explains the tricks to fool the gullible behind claims of telepathy, telekinesis, levitation and other New Age nonsense. Particularly good is his account of how simply UFO phots. can be faked.

Scams Abound
By Mr. Kenley C. Vogt
I bought this as a curiosity more than anything. I enjoy mind games and parlor tricks and was curious to learn how tricksters get "cold reads" from their subjects. If you are looking for a fun book on ESP and how people are tricked then this book is for you.

Hysterical and informative
By A Customer
Huston does a fine job cutting through the mystical BS that New Age hucksters use to separate fools from their money. While acknowledging that there are some unexplainable things out there that, when investigated honestly, make life that much more interesting, Huston has no mercy on self-proclaimed channelers, astrologers, psychics, UFO travelers, and the like who use a combination of charisma and cultish intimidation to bring believers into their fold. Read this book if you're a skeptic with a heart. You will not be disappointed.

CLASSIC THRILLER BY A MARINE TURNED AUTHOR
By charlie badger
Ted Nulty's fast paced, cannot put down book is great reading involving a drug cartel, military reaction when the Stanford's unsuspectingly purchase the content of a locker for charitable purposes to later discover its content includes hidden drug money. From that point forward it is a thriller in the Clancy, James Patterson, John Ramsey Miller tradition of twists, turns, the unexpected and action. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Ted unexpectedly at Bay Books in Coronado where he went to high school. Not having read his bio it was fascinating to learn his history. I started to read his book that day and could not put it down until I was finished. The Stanford's and their military friends battle with the drug cartel soldiers is, unfortunately, not too much of a stretch from reality for any town near the border. Its pace and cast of characters will keep you in the novel as soon as you start the fast pace movements it describes.

Incomparable Adrenaline Rush
By Ken Pecus
Rainbows and Butterflies... Is NOT what this action thriller is about. But when you are like me, and the majority of your interest revolves around people doing big Broadway production numbers, and your idea of drama might be whether The Vonn Trapps make it over the mountain, The Locker was certainly out of my sweet-spot. Add in the fact the last book review I did was probably a book REPORT in 8th grade, and you know something huge and impactful, compelled me to write this.

The one serious weakness I do have though, is for super heroes and anything to do with Marvel Comic productions. I'm an X-Men, Captain America et. al. aficionado. On a flight to Barcelona last summer I watched 4 X-Men movies in a row! #Junkie. I think it's mostly because I enjoy the feeling of enacting the super powers within each of us in the ULTIMATE WIN of good over evil. This is probably the central reason for my TOTAL obsession with this novel. Ted Nulty, in his jar head technical mindset, has either intentionally or inadvertently created a new 21st Century superhero (Tom Stanford) who's power resides in his brilliantly analytical mind, and superior skills training; as opposed to some external super power he was bequeathed. Of course every hero has his sidekick, and it is no different here. Except Tonto and Robin could only dream of being as feisty, intense, and all around kick-ass as Sheila Stanford - Agent 99 reborn 50 years later! Maybe the most attractive aspect of these heroes reside in their true embrace of their own humanity and those they love.

This was by far one of the fastest reads I have ever had. I average a book a week, predominantly non-fiction or trade technical, so I wasn't quite sure how I'd react to a crime thriller. Well it was near impossible for me to stop reading each night. I suspect I could have stayed up all day and night reading through, but I really enjoyed putting it down, just so I could pick it back up tomorrow. I felt from maybe about 25 pages into it, I was actually watching an action movie. Every aspect was so vivid and in HD in my mind.

Nulty's storyline made seamless transitions through dis separate scenes and never let you go too far away from any one important building block of the thriller. Personally I am a non-violent person so the systematic killings and conflict scenes could have left me in nightmares. However Nulty peppered the scenes with technical details that actually served to put a methodical blunt on the reality to the scene versus the true gore it represented. This was starkly contrasting to the majority of his writing which was (in my own terms), basic vernacular that we can all understand. It was nice not to need a dictionary to understand unnecessary words that some writers put in just to prove their literary prowess. At least that's how it worked for me. I'm sure this could be interpreted differently by a different personality. I suppose this would be where the genius of Ted Nulty's writing resides.

I truly hope that I have witnessed a new James Bond, Indiana Jones, or Wolverine being born here; and that I can look forward to several decades of re-incarnations of my new favorite action hero. Now if only Nulty will dress them in a cool X-Men outfit, all would be perfect in the world. Oh yeah, But then he probably did do that with the Dress Blues... I guess that might be the most inspiring uniform of them all!

Holy Cow! Forget Reacher!
By Amazon Customer
If you like a fast paced crime novel, this is it!
The idea is clever, but Ted Nulty is a natural story teller with a huge portion of genuine experience thrown in, and I truly believe he can make any idea work. His pace and rhythm are perfect. You relate to the characters and get immersed in the story. This was a classic can't-put-it-down novel.
I'm a fan of the genre, and I cannot remember when I have been so excited about a new author. I started to read this one when I got on a plane from Salt Lake City to Newark, NJ. I was almost disappointed when we landed because I had to pause my reading. I was up way too late reading it that night and stole time at work to finish it the next day. I was hooked.
I got to this author in the most unusual I ever have. I am a pretty voracious reader when I travel, which is 2 of 4 weeks a month on average. I read about 75-100 books a year and love to discover new talent. Crime novels, SF, horror, some non fiction are my usual fodder. I usually start a new author on a recommendation, from people, reader sites, etc. This time was different.
I met the author before reading the book. Of all places, I was at a handgun training course in the Mojave desert with a buddy. I live in Wyoming and my friend had a discount ticket to this course. I went, had a great time and learned a lot, but got a great deal of help from a guy that was shooting next to us. There were two groups of about 20 people each, one line shooting at a time. There was this big guy next to us on the firing line, to my right, and he was a great shot. Fast, smooth, accurate. I was impressed and he took pity on my poor shooting and gave me a lot of useful advice. Even in an active class there is always downtime and we got to talking. Turns out he was an ex Marine, I am ex Army, and we talked about a lot of things, one topic was books. He mentioned he had written a book and it was doing pretty well. I checked it out and saw I could get it for free as a part of my Prime Unlimited deal. I grabbed it but did not start reading right away as I was in the middle of 2 other books. Damn, I wish I had started it that night!

I can tell you that Ted is the real deal. He writes from experience and I would certainly not want to have to present and fire two into his thoracic cavity. I'd have two in my chest before I cleared the holster. He is fast, accurate, deadly. And, of all things, the damn guy can REALLY write. He is guaranteed to be a star. I'll be telling people in a few years that I knew Ted Nulty when he was a brand new author, met him on a shooting range and he gave me some tips. I am sure no one will believe me, though.

There is at least one bad review about the editing. Jeez, who cares? I'm sure the next 7 will be better spell checked, but If that is my big concern in an action novel, I am reading the wrong type of book. And I am a leg, quitter, wimp that needs to get back to the anti-gun rally. What a lame complaint.

Seriously, though, read this book if you like action novels, military characters, detailed and correct descriptions of firearms and their use and behavior, and any adrenaline pumping story. If you hate guns, the military, freedom, and the second amendment go elsewhere.

As for me, I am pre-buying whatever he writes.

For Ted, Sempir Fi, as for me, if you ain't Cav, you ain't s***. :)

Shadows of Carcosa: Tales of Cosmic Horror

From the fictional land of Carcosa that inspired the HBO show True Detective to H. P. Lovecraft’s accursed New England hills, this collection features some of the most legendary landscapes of the cosmic horror genre. The collection includes the following twelve stories:

Edgar Allan Poe, "MS. Found in a Bottle"
Bram Stoker, "The Squaw"
Ambrose Bierce, "Moxon's Master"
Ambrose Bierce, "The Damned Thing"
Ambrose Bierce, "An Inhabitant of Carcosa"
R. W. Chambers, "The Repairer of Reputations"
M. P. Shiel, "The House of Sounds"
Arthur Machen, "The White People"
Algernon Blackwood, "The Willows"
Henry James, "The Jolly Corner"
Walter de la Mare, "Seaton's Aunt"
H. P. Lovecraft, "The Colour Out of Space"

“The true weird tale has something more than a secret murder, bloody bones, or a sheeted form clanking chains. An atmosphere of breathless and unexplainable dread of outer, unknown forces must be present; a hint of that most terrible conception of the human brain—a malign and particular suspension or defeat of those fixed laws of Nature which are our only safeguard against the assaults of chaos and the daemons of unplumbed space.”—H. P. Lovecraft

About the Author
Ambrose Bierce (1842–1914) was born in Ohio and served in the Civil War. A lifelong journalist, he disappeared mysteriously in Mexico in 1913 while on his way to meet Pancho Villa’s army. Among his works are two collections of stories, Tales of Soldiers and Civilians and Can Such Things Be?, and a brilliant satire, The Devil’s Dictionary.

Algernon Blackwood (1869–1951) was born into an upper-class British family. He emigrated to America at the age of twenty and stayed there some ten years, during which time he worked as a reporter for The New York Evening Sun and The New York Times. When he returned to England he turned to writing fiction and soon made a name for himself with the John Silence stories, which relate the exploits of a psychic detective. Blackwood became famous in later years for playing “the Ghost Man” on BBC radio.

R.W. Chambers (1865–1933) was born in Brooklyn and studied at the Art Students League and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, exhibiting in the Salon in 1889. He sold illustrations to fashion magazines in New York City before taking up writing and finding success with his collection of stories The King in Yellow, which includes “The Repairer of Reputations.” In later life Chambers published a number of highly successful popular novels, including The Restless Sex and Police!!!, the proceeds from which allowed him to settle in a mansion in upstate New York, where he devoted himself to hunting and fishing.

Walter de la Mare (1876–1956) was one of seven children of an official at the Bank of England. He did not attend university, but worked as a bookkeeper for an oil company for some eighteen years, in the course of which he published the poems and stories that secured his literary reputation. In 1908 a grant from the Civil List allowed him to write full time. De la Mare’s fiction includes the novels The Return and The Memoirs of a Midget, as well as many stories. His poems for children and adults and his brilliantly inventive anthologies were much admired by T.S. Eliot, who became his publisher, and by W.H. Auden.

Henry James (1843–1916) was born in New York City. His father was a distinguished theologian and a follower of Emanuel Swedenborg; his older brother William James became one of America’s finest philosophers. James attended Harvard Law School and, with the encouragement of William Dean Howells, took to writing criticism and fiction. After 1866 he lived largely in Europe. His many works include the novels A Portrait of a Lady, The Wings of the Dove, The Ambassadors, and The Golden Bowl, as well as many short stories.

H.P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) was born and died in Providence, Rhode Island. His father died of syphilis when he was eight years old; his mother was later institutionalized for mental illness; and Lovecraft himself was a sickly child. In 1913 he joined the United Amateur Press Association, beginning a career as a writer in the course of which he published poems, journalism, and stories. Increasingly drawn to horror fiction, Lovecraft was a regular contributor to the Chicago pulp magazine Weird Tales. His first book-length collection of stories, The Outsider, did not appear until 1939, two years after his death.

Arthur Machen (1863–1947) was born in Wales. After failing to gain admission to the Royal College of Surgeons, he worked, not very successfully, as a journalist and translator (most famously of Casanova’s memoirs). A friend of the mystic A.E. Waite and a member of the Order of Golden Dawn, Machen was deeply interested in the occult. His fiction includes The Great God Pan, The Three Impostors, and The Hill of Dreams.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was the son of two traveling actors. Born in Boston, he was orphaned early and adopted by a tobacco exporter in Richmond, Virginia. Poe attended the University of Virginia, which he left because of gambling debts, and West Point, from which he was dishonorably discharged. “MS. Found in a Bottle” was Poe’s first significant success, and it helped him to obtain an editorial position on The Southern Literary Messenger in Baltimore, though he was soon fired for drinking. Poe married his thirteen-year-old cousin, Virginia, and moved north, where he lived in New York City and Philadelphia while continuing to produce poems, criticism, and stories at a prodigious rate. After his wife’s death from tuberculosis, Poe’s behavior became increasingly erratic. In 1849 he was found drunk and delirious in a bar in Baltimore, the apparent victim of a political gang that had kept him inebriated while escorting him from ballot station to ballot station to cast repeat votes. He died four days later.

M.P. Shiel (1865–1947) was born in the West Indies, the son of a Methodist minister of Irish and African descent. Shiel studied classics at King’s College London, flirted with medicine, then took up journalism. His most popular work in his lifetime was his novel The Yellow Danger, and Shiel, who became increasingly xenophobic over the course of his life, is said to have invented the term “the yellow peril.” His best-known work today is the remarkable apocalyptic fantasy The Purple Cloud. Described by contemporaries as “gorgeously mad,” Shiel had become a reclusive religious maniac by the time of his death. His last book, Jesus, remains unpublished.

Bram Stoker (1847–1912) was born in Dublin and studied mathematics at Trinity College, by which time he was already composing horror stories. He published Dracula in 1897. Among Stoker’s other books are The Jewel of Seven Stars and The Lair of the White Worm.

D. Thin was born in Grand Island, Nebraska, and studied in Paris.

What can a person really say about the creator of a writing style that's lasted hundreds of years?
By Edward C. Jones III
I can't say how glad I am that HP Lovecraft wrote. He may have been a little twisted (in a good way), but hope he lived as good as he deserved.
