Fascinating unsolved story ... not much new in this book, though .
By Julie
This book was a quick read about a really cold case that happened back in 1992. Probably most people that follow true crime stories will have heard of the Springfield 3 , as the case is called.
It's a really weird one because it's very seldom that 3 people come up missing all at once like these ones did. A mother , her 18 year old daughter and one of her daughter's best friends. It's their graduation night and the girls have gone to a couple of parties. They had plans to spend the night at another friend's house then go to a waterpark the next day with a group of friends but they ended up going home to Suzy's house instead.
Sometime in a few hours that early morning they all come up missing. All 3 cars and their belongings remain behind. Nothing is out of place with no signs of a struggle.
This happened 24 years ago. The book goes over general info that I'd already heard of the case. The author has his own theory of what happened. That wouldn't be my guess but at this time , everyone would just be guessing. The only one who knows for sure is the person who did it. I think it was someone that had a connection to one of the 3. Not a random act. I think the person was interviewed many times by police and also on several TV shows.
Unless that person gets a conscience someday I doubt anyone will ever get the answer.
Just a really weird case which I hope someday gets solved so the remaining family members have answers.

Plausible Theory
By Mike Lincoln
Well written and concisely summarized.
Could have discussed more of the current theories.
Strange placement of the generic "serial killer" information. Seems more like an appendix.

Jig-Saw is where the Barbara Cartland story began - she wrote the novel in 1920 when only 19. Published in hardback by Duckworth in 1925 at the price of seven shillings and sixpence, it received great acclaim from the critics who described it as 'a first novel of considerable promise' and 'a novel which is such a powerful study of "West end life with the lid off", that I can hardly believe it's been written by a girl'. This year, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of her death, the Barbara Cartland.com estate will publish 5000 limited edition exact replicas of the original book. From the original book cover: A real novel from within. The first book by a young author is a vivid and moving story of the difficulties and temptations which confront a young girl on her first entry into the richest and gayest set of London society. The intoxication of her new freedom and her love of adventure lead her inevitably to exploit her wit and beauty to her own unhappiness, but by good luck and her own native goodness she finds peace and happiness at last. It is a dramatic conflict of emotions, written with a zest and freshness which will win the admiration of all readers.

Luther and Calvin on Secular Authority (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought), by John Calvin, Martin Luther

This volume contains new, unabridged translations of Luther's On Secular Authority and Calvin's On Civil Government. These works represent the authors' attempts to balance their commitments to the maintenance of order in Church and polity on the one hand, and the overriding imperative of uncompromising obedience to the will of God as revealed in Scripture on the other. The book is intended to be readily intelligible to students and nonspecialists, but precise enough for scholars. The introduction relates the works to the thought and activities of their authors, and a glossary, chronology and bibliography are also provided.

About the Author
John Calvin (1509-1564) was a major theologian of the Reformation period. He is known especially for his highly influential theological work, "Institutes of the Christian Religion".

Martin Luther (1483, 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus, unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers. These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher.

Benjamin Wirt Farley is Younts Professor Emeritus of Bible, Religion, and Philosophy at Erskine College. He is the translator of John Calvin's Sermons on the Ten Commandments.

Luther H. Martin is Professor of Religion Emeritus at the University of Vermont, USA.

Harro Hopfl is one of the leading historians of ideas writing in Britain today.

He has also published a collection of classical verse in his own English translations, Parrots, Poets, and Philosophers & Good Advice (London, 1999).

A masterpiece of theological reflection on secular authority by two titans of religious thought. Undeniably a must-read.
By C.H.E. Sadaphal
This text addresses two basic questions: (1) “For Christians, what role should secular government play in our lives? and (2) Should we be obedient to God, the State, or both?”

Answers are provided through select passages from the writings of two well renowned theologians—Martin Luther (a German monk who spearheaded the Protestant Reformation) and John Calvin (a French minister and the father of Calvinism).

In short, both men recognize the authority, necessity, and the explicit distinctions between, divine and secular authority. Both also recognize that the former reigns supreme and that the Christian’s primary allegiance is to God and not the State. That being said, both have somewhat divergent interpretations as what that actually means for the Christian in secular society.

Calvin has a more optimistic view of mankind, and believes that government should be used as a tool to mold the hearts of men into more upright, righteous people. He says that “civil government has its appointed end … to cherish and protect the outward worship of God, to defend sound doctrine of piety and the position of the church, to adjust our life to the society of men, to form our social behavior to civil righteousness, to reconcile with one another, and to promote general peace and tranquility.” Note how Calvin sees a very proactive and positive function of government to defend, adjust, form, and promote.

Luther, on the other hand, had a more pessimistic view of humanity and divides humans into two groups—the believers and the non-believers. He thought the former group to be in the minority, and amongst them, the people who actually acted as they should are few and far between. Accordingly, he suggests that the State exists not to play such an aggressive role in society and should punish evil (a more negative formulation), cognizant that without some form of established order, the evil that men are predisposed to do would run amok. Luther thought Christians didn’t essentially need secular authority because if they lived according to divine law, there would be no need to obey the subordinate secular authorities. He still contends, however, for the sake of others and to lead by example, that Christians ought to obey secular laws when not in contradiction to the scriptures.

Many readers would be particularly surprised what both men say about a “just” war.

The book is very short (less than 100 pages) but isn’t necessarily a quick read. I personally believe that this deserves a position on the bookshelf of anyone involved in theological study or education.

The scriptures in the Bible always remain the same, but the interpretation of those who read It differ. I believe this point is particularly relevant today since many political and religious demagogues use the Bible as a means to justify their proposals and actions. This book provides two insightful perspectives on the role of civil government in a Christian’s life and allows you to think and form your own opinion. On Secular Authority will serve anyone—seminary professors and students, theologians, pastors, teachers, or the simply curious—well and provide intelligent insight into a dilemma that still reverberates now as it did hundreds of years ago when these words were written.

A Great Comparison of two views on the relationship of Church and State
By Bror Erickson
This book deserves a couple of reads. Serious theologians, pastors, political parishioners can all benefit from a careful reading of this book. Today with the religious right, and secularists battling it out in every political campaign, a culture war doing the culture more harm than good from both sides, this book needs to be read more.
For the most part, aside from some commentary you have Luther's writings and Calvin's writings on both sides. Tricky is to see the subtle difference that becomes profound in practice. Luther says that there are two authorities to which all CHRISTIANS are subject. Calvin starts his treatise saying that all men are subject to both these same authorities. This makes a profound difference in what the church is and what the state is. For Luther the church is about the gospel proclaiming the forgiveness of sins, and the only people that are subject to whatever authority it has are Christians who have been won for Christ by the work of the Holy Spirit. They willfully follow the churches teachings concerning morality, and subject themselves to the forgiveness of sins. The two authorities are the church and state. Christians don't need the state to tell them to do good, in so far as they are Christian, but saint and sinner, as they are the state will need to curb the activity even of Christians at times for the good of society.
However, the state is about enforcing laws and keeping peace. To this end all people need be subject to it. The state can't afford to forgive sins, or confuse its role with that of the church. To the state has been entrusted the sword, and it isn't for good looks.
Calvin though would confuse this by making all people subject to both the church and the state, there may as well be only one authority then. And sadly as Calvin's Geneva showed this becomes the case. Rather than being about the forgiveness of sins, the church becomes a persecutor, another arm of the state enforcing man made laws in the name of Christ.
This book does much to show the differences between the two men. Luther was not a Calvinist.

Wonderful Book, Wonderful Artist, Wonderful Beads!
By Inja55
First, let me say that before reading this book, I had read what I happen to consider the "Bible" of Glass Beadmaking, "Making Glass Beads" by Cindy Jenkins.

That being said, Corina Tettinger's book is the perfect follow-up to Jenkins book. Still, it isn't necessary to purchase or read Jenkin's book first, as Tettinger covers many of the same numerous details that you need to know if you plan to get into this type of artwork which requires patience, dedication, and a sense of humor.

This book is wonderful for many reasons, not the least of which is that it is bound in such a way that you can leave the book open to a particular page. So, if you need to prop the book up to look at the technique you are attempting, the book does not "fight" you while doing it.

The book itself is in a large format and the photographs are very well taken (and I speak as somewhat of an expert on this, after 35 years as a photographer) so I always want photographs to "explain" the technique to me as well as the written word.

And you are able to see the technique that Tettinger is describing, step by step, just as in Jenkin's book, which, while less expensive, is also physically smaller.

I also discovered that Tettinger will have examples of her beads for sale on eBay from time to time, and it's fun to be able to contact her if you have a question about a particular bead technique. She is very friendly and humble regarding her work.

If you keep track of her auctions you will see that her beads go for a very high price with many bidders. But like the book, they are worth every penny.

The book is costly,I paid around $85.00 for mine, but I purchased it right after it was printed and I wasn't about to wait for the price to go down, that is how much I wanted her book.

You definitely get what you pay for here. And, should she ever decide to write another followup book that is as large and as informative, I would most certainly buy it.

flameworking book
By Valntynes
If you only buy one book for flameworking buy this one. The price scared me off at first but I wish I knew what was inside and I would have never hesitated. It is so worth the price and it is the one that I use the most. I always have it open and I never tire of it. It never stops giving me something new to work on or tips to refine what I have already done.
The author is so giving of her talent and in a way that anyone can understand and get the concepts.
Great for a new person as well as anyone looking to refine what they already know.
Kudos Corina!

Born into a wealthy and prominent Cape Fear River plantation family, Howe became a militia officer, justice of the peace, and legislator. In 1775 he was appointed colonel of the Second North Carolina Regiment and became commanding general of the Southern Department and the highest ranking officer in the states south of Virginia. He also served as a division commander with General Washington's main army in the New York Highlands, commanded the crucial West Point post, and put down mutinies in the American army.

From Library Journal
Howe (1732-86) was North Carolina's only major general in the Revolution and the highest-ranking officer from the states south of Virginia. He participated in the French and Indian War, led royal troops against the Regulators in 1768, served in his provincial congress, won laurels at Norfolk in 1776, commanded the Southern Department, headed the fort at West Point, and ran a "network of spies" that helped thwart the treason of Benedict Arnold. Why then is he not better known? He left few papers and died before writing memoirs, but above all he "lost" Georgia to the British in 1778. The authors argue strongly that he did all he could, but they are handicapped by a lack of documentation. Nevertheless, this judicious military history restores the contributions of an important Revolutionary figure. For specialists.

Remarkable Look at a Forgotten Founding Father
By Kevin M. Derby
Robert Howe was the highest ranking Revolutionary War general from the states south of Virginia yet he remains one of the most forgotten of the Founding Fathers. Howe was an important commander. He led the Department of the South until late 1778 and American history would have been quite different had he proven successful in taking Florida or defending Savannah during his tenure in command.

Congressman Charles Bennett and Prof. Donald Lennon rescued Howe from the dustbin of history in this splendid little biography. While focusing on Howe's role in the American Revolution, the authors also focus on Howe's odd career on the stage of North Carolina politics of the 1760s and 1770s. They also bring the man to life to some extent-capturing his rather shoddy personal life (Howe was a womanizer and was one of the few elites from that era who had been divorced); his reckless personal spending; his sly sense of humor; his love of Shakespeare; his bad handwriting; his love of eating fish; and his pompous demeanor. Bennett and Lennon also offer an excellent narrative of Howe's repeated invasions of Florida and the failed defense of Savannah. They also offer great insight into Howe's role commanding defensive positions in New York and in putting down two mutinies in the later stages of the war in New Jersey. Howe died of a fever shortly after the war ended and never earned the recognition that he craved.

Strangely enough for a man with Howe's political background, his chief weakness as a commander was his terrible relations with the political leaders of South Carolina and Georgia (he even ended up in a duel with Christopher Gadsden). Howe was a regular officer and never was given control of the militia as he so badly desired in his invasion of Florida and his defense of Savannah. Despite this, Howe had a number of important patrons including George Washington and Henry Laurens. Bennett and Lennon offer an interesting look at this neglected general and do so in a readable, though short, biography. Best of all, they use primary sources to offer an unforgettable portrait of a rather forgettable general. While not exactly a good general, Robert Howe comes off as-dare we use such a word for a Founding Father-fun.

I love history and this book was a look at the past and gives you a view of how some duels ended between men that didn't want it to happen in the first place.
