This essay is outstanding and should be read by anyone who wants to fully understand what happened in their interaction of illusion with an NPD. I am one of those people who can handle most anything that life deals me as long as I can understand it. This book helped me to do just that - to understand what happened - and to come to terms with the end of my relationship with someone who acted unwilling (and was most probably unable)to treat me and my agenda with respect and dignity. The essay gave me insight into the soul of the narcissistic and the result was pure empathy for that person. I learned that I cannot let charm draw me back in for more hurt and pain because this disorder is bigger than me and my ability to handle the resulting discomfort. The author is to be highly commended for his work. I found it outstanding! Many thanks to the author for allowing it to be on Kindle as I am certain it will prove to be of help to a great many people.

Best Book on the Subject of Narcissism/Psycopathy

Excellent, excellent book, and the best I have seen on the subject of narcissism and psychopathy. Very well written, thoroughly researched, and obviously written by someone who knows the topic inside and out. This is the book you read last, after you've read all the amateur works that first get you familiar with the topic. One of the things I love about this book is that it was quite obviously written by someone familiar with the science of the topic and who has done substantial research of available literature, going back to Freud and earlier. It is not one of the cha-cha boutique books that are commonly written on the topic to satisfy the masses.

One of the reviews I read before I got this book mocked the writer because he did not have substantial credentials nor professional training, but that's just it...this topic is seldom well covered in the study of psychology and psycho analysis...and most professionals know scarcely little about it. My guess is that the vast majority of professional psychologists stick to the basic criteria defining narcissism and do not slot patients appropriately since they are unfamiliar with all the details of this psychosis. They do even less to alleviate the problems of an individual who has to deal with a narcissist/psychopath on a regular basis. Mr. Vaknin is, I believe the authority on this topic, and has educated himself and filled the holes that any psychology education would have easily left.

Previous to this, I found "Psychopath Free" to be the best of the genre, but it is rather heavy on emotions and rather light on substantiation.

If I have any issue with this work, it is that the last few chapters are obviously a summary of a larger work, hence a bit too thinly covered, particularly for the non-professional. Getting the original work is an obvious next step, although it is quite pricey and difficult to obtain.

I'd recommend this work highly to anyone who has had a harrowing experience being on the receiving end of this disease and wants to be thoroughly informed before proceeding with their own recovery, or interested in protecting their psyche from the many individuals out there who seem to suffer from the disease. Frankly, the current statistics on narcissists and psychopaths are, in my opinion, considerably understated.

Really helped me understand

This really helped me understand the few narcissists in my life. It also helped me be able to empathize with their very convoluted inner world and helped me come to grips with some of the inane behaviors I've seen them exhibit.

I'd recommend this book for anyone who has had to deal with an overt narcissist in their past or present.

Considering Eliot's previous controversial biographies, including Walt Disney: Hollywood's Dark Prince (LJ 5/1/93) and Down Thunder Road: The Making of Bruce Springsteen (LJ 8/92), it's not surprising that ex-Eagle Don Henley tried to halt publication of this well-researched study of America's biggest band of the 1970s. The artist and the author eventually reached a truce, with the reticent Henley sitting for interviews, and this may explain why some unsavory details (such as Henley's 1980 drug bust) are lightly glossed over. Eliot gives little insight into what made the band tick, but he does provide an excellent contextualization of the early 1970s L.A. rock scene, and he offers fascinating character studies of Eagle compadres Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and J.D. Souther, as well as music biz barons David Geffen and Irving Azoff. The generous appendix includes extensive notes and a detailed discography. Recommended for popular music collections.

MOR rockers the Eagles have had well-publicized leadership battles, romantic entanglements, and legal problems during a hugely successful career. Purveying every player's perspective, Eliot lays out all the complications, rehashing such things as the internal battles that pitted Don Henley against Glenn Frey (until Frey retreated in a cocaine haze) and the contretemps between Henley and Joe Walsh. It is nice to have all the recriminations recorded in one place--for research purposes, y'know. And it is also nice to note how the likes of peripatetic management suit Irving Azoff, skyrocketing deal maker David Geffen, and many another glitzy denizen of the 1970s pop music fun house meddled with the band. As important for chronicling how the pop music world changed from the hollowly idealistic 1960s to the openly crass 1980s as for chronicling one of the commercially biggest pop bands ever, the book is, however, a work of nostalgia more than of insight into a vital creative force in popular music. Through a jaundiced eye.

Marc Eliot has written a detailed book about a rock group whose members have shunned personal publicity of any type. It was interesting to read about the backgrounds of each of the members, and it added a lot to understanding the persons they became. His descriptions of drug use and sexual promiscuity were stunning. Are they accurate? To a great extent his reports are confirmed by Don Felder in his autobiography, although Felder tended to minimize the drug use, no doubt because of his involvement.

It was absolutely fascinating to read how Don Henley and Glenn Frey were radically changed by their use of cocaine, although he never comes right out and says "Look how they've changed." His description of the orgies in the "Third Encore" makes me wonder if they owned stock in a pharmaceutical company for all their STDs. It is also fairly clear that their manager, Irving Azoff, condoned and enabled them to continue their destructive behavior. Eliot painted such a vivid picture of an obnoxious, arrogant little man that I hope I never meet Azoff. It is truly a miracle that they all survived.

If you're like me and read everything you can find about The Eagles, this is worth adding to your collection.

...especially for homeschoolers...this is the same as Nila Barton Smith's "Be a Better Reader" series...a carefully graded series of books that presents increasingly difficult reading material in a cross-curricular fashion...each "unit" has a theme -- e.g. "Adventures in Flight"...each theme has four subunits, each of hich is directed at literature, social studies, science, and mathematics...each subunit covers phonetics, vocabulary, inferences, outlining, notetaking, etc...also covered are practical topics like interpreting an ingredients label, reading a roadmap, etc...one of the first things you discover when you homeschool is the need to be efficient -- time constraints demand hitting as many bases as possible with each minute available...books like this really help...

The "Be A Better Reader" series is fantastic, especially the diagnostic booklet. I have used this series for the last two years to diagnose and remediate my ESL students. The results on the TELPAS test reflect the benefits of the series. Again, something that is wonderful has been passed over for a "newer model" in the education field. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" should be the mantra in education. Sadly, someone always wants to re-invent the wheel and the students are short-changed in the process. IF you can find the diagnostic booklet, snap it up. It is worth its weight in gold.

About the Author

Lorenzo Vidino is a fellow with the International Security Program's Initiative on Religion in International Affairs at the Belfer Center, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He is also a Peace Scholar at the U.S. Institute of Peace and author of the first book on al Qaeda in Europe, Al Qaeda in Europe: The New Battleground of Global Jihad. Vidino holds a law degree from the University of Milan Law School and a Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

Best and complete account of the Brotherhood

No written work comes close to what Vidino has accomplished with this landmark book. This is, without a doubt, the most complete and reasonable account of what may be the world's most important movement - the Muslim Brotherhood. Unlike other academics and commentators who focus solely on the Middle East, Vidino takes a hard look at the movement's activities in the West that manages to be both investigative and scholarly. The amount of original, primary research in this book is impressive. And, as the other reviewer noted, he does all this without being (a) an apologist or (b) a right-wing fanatic - the two categories of people who seem to do all the talking and writing about the Brotherhood in the West these days.

Aside from the information and analysis itself, Vidino's work is elegantly written. Each chapter is substantial enough to stand alone, but they also integrate effectively as a whole.

Important title on a topical subject

In a clearly written volume, marshalling a wealth of evidence presented logically and parsimoniously, Lorenzo Vidino traces the rise of Brotherhood offshoots in Western Europe and North America. While enjoying operational independence from the Middle East, the New Brothers in the West share historical, financial, personal, organizational, and ideological ties to the parent structure. They have fostered a strong Islamic identity among the growing Muslim community in the West and gained acceptance as representatives of local Muslim communities in their dealing with the Western governments. These aims have been pursued in spite of their dogmatic flexibility, which allows the Brothers to use different, even contradictory, discourses for different audiences, and the fact that their membership accounts for only a small fraction of Western Muslim communities and no democratic mechanism allowed those communities to appoint them as portavoce. The volume discusses Great Britain, Germany, and the United States, documenting the activities of the Brotherhood in these countries, together with their relationships with these governments and other Muslim organizations. Case studies of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands would have mapped more thoroughly the work of Brotherhood offshoots in Europe, as all these countries are different to some degree so that the reasons why only three cases were selected remain understated. The discussion of the Brotherhood's acceptance of violence is particularly useful, highlighting the fact that, although the organization has consistently denounced terrorism, its condemnations have not been unconditional. Indeed, the Brotherhood declared that the acts of those who resist an occupation "are justified both morally and under Islamic law" (211), an argument that applies to Palestine, Chechnya, Kashmir, and Iraq. Vidino proposes "a policy of cautious and informed engagement" (225) as the most appropriate course of action for Western governments. Filling a gap by examining an understudied topic of relevance for the post-9/11 world, this volume is a key addition to the literature and a must read for students, academics and practitioners who are interested in understanding an organization that has assumed the role of spokesperson for the ever growing Western Muslim community.
