About the Author

Known as “the father of software quality,” Watts S. Humphrey is the author of numerous influential books on the software-development process and software process improvement. Humphrey is a fellow of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University, where he founded the Software Process Program and provided the vision and early leadership for the original Capability Maturity Model (CMM). He also is the creator of the Personal Software Process (PSP) and Team Software Process (TSP). Recently, he was awarded the National Medal of Technology—the highest honor given by the president of the United States to America's leading innovators.

Great book

Mr. Humphery has produced another winner. Every example is easy to relate to real world environments. The Summary and Conclusions at the end of every chapter are real jems. I have raved about the book to everyone at my company and I am trying to get sponsership from executive management for the processes defined in the book.

5th book on the topic by Humphrey - aimed at business execs

This book is well written and makes a compelling case for the author's personal and team software processes (PSP and TSP respectively). Whereas the first four books by Humphrey, published between 1989 and 1999, were aimed at individual software engineers and technical managers, this one is for higher level decision makers who are probably wondering why software development seems to be a money pit while other enterprise business units manage to operate with some degree of efficiency.
The case that is made in the book remains focused on business. More importantly, it shows how to apply productivity accounting and quality techniques defined in both the PSP and TSP can introduce controls to software development.
What I like about the book is Humphrey's complete change of tone from his previous books, which were written for technical professionals, to appeal to business executives. He addresses all of the key points: why projects fail and how to prevent the failures, the need for leadership instead of mere management, and the importance of not only building a team approach, but in changing the culture in the development organization. These are points that business managers understand in practice, and it shows that development can be a controlled process much like manufacturing or service processes that are likely to be the company's core business. They also dispell the fallacy that software development is different.
Although the book stays focused on business aspects, Humphrey does drift off into technical territory at times, sometimes to the point of risking the attention of the business reader. He also misses an opportunity to show how PSP and TSP are natural fits into organizations that are using Extreme Programming, which would have given the business audience some leverage when dealing with their technical counterparts. However, that is probably beyond the scope of the book.
If you want to trace the evolution of PSP and TSP it's documented in the author's earlier books: Managing the Software Process (1989), A Discipline for Software Engineering [and one of the best in my opinion for its completeness and approach] (1995), Introduction to the Personal Software Process (1996), and Introduction to the Team Software Process (1999). If you are exploring either the PSP or TSP with a goal of building a business case this book is ideal. Also note that there are open source tools developed by the Process Dashboard Initiative and distributed at no cost that will greatly aid in implementing the recommendations that are made in this book.

Good overview of problems, but tough to get traction from

This book is targeted at executives, but it's also useful for developers who might be curious about what Humphrey's been talking about for the last few years in his PSP and TSP processes. Value comes in this book from understanding what many problems in software development are, why you have to address them, and at what level they need to be addressed. That said, it was difficult to really 'close the loop' and get the end-to-end on how one would go from having recognized the problems to organizing people to solving it, to actually rolling out solutions. Still, a good book nonetheless, and more than worth reading, especially if you don't feel like sitting through one of the PSP/TSP books.

Unselfing Ourselves from Self-centered Plastic Christianity

I am a big fan of Eugene Peterson's writings, so I admit being a little prejudiced I guess--but here is another 5 star pick from him I would highly recommend. In looking at 11 different Psalms the author calls believers to abandon the shallowness that passes for much of American Christianity for a deeper walk in "unselfing" ourselves to impact us personally, families, churches, society and our world in general...moving from self-centeredness to community. Excellent and cannot recommend highly enough. Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Serious subject with humor and common sense

Not just about weight loss, but a lot about just eating the way our bodies were designed to utilize food. Dr. Briffa doesn't lecture about what we should do. He seems to share what he has seen working for himself and his patients. Even better: it doesn't really cost anything (aside from the cost of the book) to give his ideas a try.

Much needed!

This is the book I was thinking needed to be written. It's for hard losers who want to be healthy while shedding the pounds. You won't find much new in the book but what you will find is a well written, easy to understand combination of Atkin's and Primal eating. This is the single best diet approach for most obese and health challenged individuals. I still recommend reading Atkin's, The Primal Blueprint and The Paleo Solution but this (as far as I can tell) is the first true progressive merger!

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN HEBREW IN 2004 ENGLISH READERS (TRANSLATED IN 2008) CAN ALSO NOW APPRRECIATE DR ESHEL'S ADDITIONAL INSIGHTS INTO THE DSS GAINED FROM ARCHEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE WHICH MANY PREVIOUS SCHOLARS, ACCORDING TO ESHEL, SIMPLY HAVE IGNORED (10). ESHEL THEREFORE BELIEVES HISTORICAL NAMES AND EVENTS GLEAMED FROM ABOUT "TEN SCROLLS" (3) GIVE CREDENCE INTO LOOKING MORE CLOSELY INTO THESE MENTIONED HISTORICAL FIGURES (TWELVE IN PARTICULAR) FOR MEANING AND INTERPRETAION OF THE HASMONEAN PERIOD. SO WHILE FOCUSING ON THE PERIOD FROM 170 B.C.E TO 48 B.C.E..HE DISCUSSES SUCH FIGURES IN CHAPTERS TWO THROUGH EIGHT WHO LIVED DURING THIS TIME BY ASSEMBLING VARIOUS AND KEY TEXTS WHICH EVIDENCES HIS POINTS. understanding my grandson's return from Afghanistan

I gave it a 4 only because it's not the original Chicken hawk, my life long favorite book. ( i just keep reading it over and over). Chiken hawk is the original five. Back to the world would get a five if it was Mason's only work..
My farm raised grandson is home from a sixteen month tour of Iraq and two tours Afgahnistan. I sobered him up, got him smoking medical pot, and literally read back in the world to him in the pickup while I had him trapped and stoned! I know Masons work saved his life as i got him through the PTSD progran at the fkn VA! He is now in helicopter school with 48 hours and no longer contemplating suicide!
The war on drugs is almost over here in wash state and our Veterans for Compassionate Care has declared war on veteran suicides.
Bob Mason's book, back in the world will, be the first required reading during the preliminary detox at the Clare residential center for veterans in Spokane Wash.
Bob Mason's writing style and frank honesty does and will continue to save veterans lives !

To understand the Vietnam "Helicopter War" this is a must read.

As a combat infantry veteran (aka "Grunt") of the Vietnam War I can fully appreciate this author's work. The concept of using helicopters as the primary means of inserting, supporting and extracting ground troops into hostile jungle territory was initiated in 1965 by the 1st Cavalry Division, dubbed "Airmobile" for this reason. The most famous "test" of this concept occurred at Landing Zones X-Ray and Albany in the Ia Drang Valley during November of that year under the command of Lt. Col. Harold "Hal" Moore, and is documented in both his written work and the highly acclaimed movie "We Were Soldiers." Mr. Mason served as a Warrant Officer / Pilot of the infamous "Huey" helicopter during this as well as countless other Combat Assault and other missions.

Mason's writing is masterful; entertaining, highly credible and convincing. He takes us with him through the rigors of "chopper school" and subsequently half way around the world to Vietnam where he witnesses and experiences the sheer brutality of war. Chopper pilots and crews not only worked under extremely dangerous conditions for extended periods, but also worked exhausting schedules. The accounts of everyday life for him are a revelation to others who served in different capacities. Infantry soldiers naturally consider their personal battle experiences as the most graphic and dangerous, but after reading an account such as "Chickenhawk" we have to admit that while our life on the ground was not enviable, life in the air was no better, and often times much worse. I served a couple years later on the ground with the 1st Cavalry. We considered the choppers as our "lifeline" then, and we appreciate them even more today, attributing our survival in large part to their efforts and sacrifices.

As with many who experienced the Vietnam War personally, Mason unfortunately brought the war home with him in the form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). His experience was the basis for the highly acclaimed book "Recovering from the War" by his wife Patience H. C. Mason.

My review cannot fully communicate the value of this exceptionally well written work. I recommend it highly to all those who served, but also to anyone touched personally by the Vietnam War, whether it be family, friend or others simply interested. And finally, I salute you Mr. Mason for your service and dedication; it has not been forgotten.

I was talking to a helicopter friend of mine in her hangar about my fascination with helicopters and how it took hold when I worked for the USFS in 1976. Spruce budworm was ravaging the PNW, mostly the dryer forests of Eastern Washington. My job was as a member of a crew of two to four who were responsible for targeting areas of the forest for sampling. We traveled mostly by helicopter because usually there were no roads and it would take days to hike in. I told her of the "crazy" chopper pilots who had come back from Vietnam and were flying commercially as subcontractor to the USFS. She suggested I read "Chickenhawk," by Robert Mason, if I was interested in that sort of thing. Yes, I am. I was eligible for the draft in '71 but U.S. troop strength had peaked in 1968. Still, like all else in this situation, I worried I might get drafted. I downloaded the book and started reading, putting it down only twice before finishing. Mason's narrative is plainly written and down to earth as he tells us about flying in the jungles of wartime Vietnam. I had heard the pilots I worked with in '76 talk about many of the sorts of situations Mason writes about. I don't remember if I believed them at that time, thinking maybe it's just a little wartime bravado. This is spite of the extreme flying those pilots did with a crew of four, excluding the pilot. After flying with them for just a week, I started bringing extra underwear to work.

I am glad this book found its way to me. A boatload of years have passed since those days for me but I remember the voices and the stories of the pilots, most still wearing battle fatigues. "Chickenhawk" showed me that their stories were true. Remembering again, I knew I was fortunate to have that experience with those guys. "Chickenhawk" is a graphic chronicle of how they got that experience. Read it.
