About the Author
Born in New York City, Janet Belsky always wanted to be a writer but was also very interested in people. After receiving her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, she deferred to her more practical and people-loving side and got her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Chicago. Janet spent her thirties in New York City teaching at Lehman College, CUNY, and doing clinical work in hospitals and nursing homes. During this time, she wrote one trade book, Here Tomorrow, Making the Most of Life After 50, got married, adopted a child and, with the publication of the first undergraduate textbook in the psychology of aging, began what turned into a lifelong developmental science textbook writing career. In 1991, Janet moved to Tennessee with her family to write and teach undergraduate courses in psychology at Middle Tennessee State University. After her husband died in 2012, Janet returned to Chicago to construct a new life. Following her optimally-aging plan to get a rigorous classical education, Janet enrolled in the Master’s Program in Liberal Arts at the University of Chicago (a beginning graduate student again at the U of C, after 45-plus years!). Still, she remains committed to her life passion—exciting readers in the marvelous human lifespan through this book.

Great read, naturally captivating

As an average college student attending an online university (CMU), I found this book to be the best psychology text I have ever read.

-Easy to read
-Explains concepts well
-Uses real world examples
-From the heart (author tries to relate to reader as much as possible)
-Interesting subject, naturally : )
-The writing style keeps your attention, and isn't "boring reading"
-Self-quiz questions, with answers at the end of each chapter
-Vocabulary words are not overwhelming, unlike some other texts I have read from
-Chapter summaries

Overall my experience with this book was fantastic and I learned a whole lot from taking the course that utilized this text.

This is a great introductory book to psychology and human development!

Overview:
I loved this book! I am a psych major, and this book is a great way to introduce you to the field. Bel sky does a fantastic job presenting this material in a chronological order. As the chapters in this book progress, it gradually tells you the psychology behind human beings as they age from infancy up until death. All key terms are boldfaced and easy to find, and there are lots of resources inside of the book you can use to test your knowledge. This book was truly a pleasure to read and is what initially got me addicted to psychology. I am now a graduate student on my way to be a mental health specialist (i.e. therapist) and I have carried much of the knowledge in this book with me throughout my entire academic life.

Great textbook!!

I read this book for my psychology class. What a great textbook. The author gives so many great examples and the topics are discussed in an easy to understand way. After reading the final chapter in the book, I just had to write this review because I enjoyed reading this book. You can really get absorbed in all of the topics. I like the way the book is organized and how Author Belsky gives opposing viewpoints. She also treats all cultures with respect, and you can glean that she is a compassionate human being. Textbooks are usually impersonal, but she gives personal examples, as well, which adds to the book's appeal.

Sigve K. Tonstad is professor of biblical interpretation at Loma Linda University in California. He completed medical school and a residency in internal medicine at Loma Linda University and a PhD in New Testament studies at the University of St. Andrews. He is the author of Saving God's Reputation (2006), a book dealing with the question of theodicy. Among courses in his teaching portfolio are God and Human Suffering.

Excellent book about DCC

The Digitrax bible for using their DCC system. Not the best organized, nor best illustrated, and it reminds me of an older text manual. However, the material is comprehensive, and it's all here to get one up & running - whether converting an older block-wired ' straight DC system, or starting from scratch w/ a new DCC system. It would behove Digitrax to seriously consider a more modern update to this book. . .

Exhaustive and Sometimes Numbing but Worthwhile

This book can be looked at as a gigantic advertisement for Digitrax digital command and control equipment. That is what it is but it is also much, much more. It is also a thorough introduction to a subject which intimidates many model railroaders. Most of what is presented is independent of manufacturer. Digitrax plugs their own equipment but they also point out that most of the information applies to their competitors as well. Where things are not so universal, this is clearly pointed out.

The book explains not only what DCC is but also explains how to most effectively use it. Sections are presented on planning and construction. The use of DCC is examined for the control of locomotives and also for the control of stationary devices. The ways that it can be used for reporting and signaling are thoroughly examined. Indeed, one of the more difficult things about the book is that it is so thorough that the information seems to blend together sometimes since I don't have any real working examples to experiment with. Still, this will be a useful reference for a long time to come.

This book is out of print. That makes me wonder if a newer edition is on the way. I hope so.

Is this "The Big Book of DCC"

Thanks to John Palmer from New Zealand, DCC Model Train users around the world can now learn how to get more out of their Digitrax products. This book is well set out in different chapters that cater for the basic user through to the person who is more technically inclined. Also included is a Glossary to help define most of the DCC terminology. I myself have had a lot of fun setting up user defined speed tables with the help of this book. Throughout the book there is a good selection of pictures and diagrams to further help the reader. Although it is geared towards the Digitrax user, I recommend this book to any and all DCC users.
