The Iliad, by Homer

The Iliad is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma, for which Barry Powell, one of the twenty-first century's leading Homeric scholars, has given us a magnificent new translation. Graceful, lucid, and energetic, Powell's translation renders the Homeric Greek with a simplicity and dignity reminiscent of the original. The text immediately engrosses students with its tight and balanced rhythms, while the incantatory repetitions evoke a continuous "stream of sound" that offers as good an impression of Homer's Greek as one could hope to attain without learning the language.

Accessible, poetic, and accurate, Powell's translation is an excellent fit for today's students. With swift, transparent language that rings both ancient and modern, it exposes them to all of the rage, pleasure, pathos, and humor that are Homer's Iliad. Both the translation and the introduction are informed by the best recent scholarship.

FEATURES

* Uses well-modulated verse and accurate English that is contemporary but never without dignity

* Powell's introduction sets the poem in its philological, mythological, and historical contexts

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Following Stephen Mitchell’s superbly cadenced translation by a mere two years, Powell’s Iliad may not get the popular attention it deserves. That would be a great shame, for while Mitchell’s line is more singing, Powell’s very similar five-beat line is scarcely inferior. It, too, maintains the great forward momentum of Homer’s narration—it’s magnetically readable. But Powell puts explanatory notes at the pages’ feet rather than in an appendix like Mitchell, who probably doesn’t want to distract the reader from the narrative flow. Nevertheless, the footnotes’ greater accessibility is welcome. Whereas Mitchell’s introduction is primarily concerned with the qualities of the text, Powell’s longer one is much more historical, concerned with the evolution of writing; the nature of oral literature; Homer’s influence on Greek and Western history; the historical probabilities behind The Iliad; and what Homer’s portrayal of motivation and character—divine as well as human—reveals about a society creating literature out of oral traditions. Adding attractiveness as well as cultural supplementation, Powell also disperses more than 50 illustrations depicting moments in the poem, all drawn from Hellenic pottery and Roman frescoes. It’s tempting to think of Powell’s as a student’s and of Mitchell’s as a reader’s Iliad, but any library that can accommodate both really ought to. They’re both invaluable versions for the twenty-first century. --Ray Olson

Review

"Powell, a distinguished Homer scholar and published poet with multiple books on the study of ancient Greek text and classical mythology, faces two challenges common to all translators of Homeric verse: how to capture the essential vigor and concision of oral poetry while remaining readable and how to represent a highly stylized and archaic idiom without sounding stilted. Powell is successful on both counts, offering a clear and energetic translation... Staying true to Homer's poetic rhythms, Powell avoids the modified iambic lines found in Lattimore's, Fagles's, and Mitchell's works. He also avoids Lombardo's tendency to cast Homer in contemporary language and Fitzgerald's anachronisms. This fine version of The Iliad has a feel for the Greek but is more accessible than Verity's translation. Highly recommended." --Library Journal

"Barry Powell, the master of classical mythology, has done it again--a powerful translation of the poem that started European literature, His muscular verses are faithful to the original Greek but bring the characters to life. This is a page-turner, bound to become the new standard." --Ian Morris, author of Why the West Rules-For Now

"With swift, transparent language that rings both ancient and modern, Barry Powell gives readers anew all of the rage, pleasure, pathos, and humor that are Homer's Iliad -- a reading experience richly illumined by the insightful commentary and plentiful images accompanying the text." --Jane Alison, author of The Love-Artist

"Barry Powell's clever translation is simple and energetic: sometimes coarse, sometimes flowing, it is always poetically engaged. He lays bare the semantic background of Homer through felicitous phrasing and delivers us a Dark-Age epic, one more suggestive of Norse sagas than the cultural milieu of archaic Ionia. Fresh and eminently readable, Powell's Iliad is likely to stay." --Margalit Finkelberg, editor of The Homer Encyclopedia

"This fine translation of the Iliad uses well-modulated verse and accurate English that is contemporary but never without dignity. It gives the modern reader as good an impression of Homer's sonorous Greek as one could hope to attain without learning the language; its execution is faithful in spirit to the poet, who composed his great epic orally without the use of writing. Both the translation and the introduction are consistently informed by the best recent scholarship. This translation deserves a very warm welcome." --Richard Janko, University of Michigan

"Powell's translation renders the Homeric Greek with a simplicity and dignity reminiscent of the original. Lucid and fast, the text immediately engrosses the reader, with a tight and balanced rhythm that sings and with a closeness to the original that allows the reader to hear the incantatory repetitions in the Greek. More accessible than Lattimore, more poetic than Lombardo, and more accurate than Fagles or Fitzgerald, this translation is an excellent fit for today's students and general readers." --William Johnson, Duke University

"Magnetically readable." --Booklist (starred review)

A Stirring Translation
By Thomas A. Holmes
Essentially, when reviewing translations, one has to acknowledge the credentials of the translator, trust that the translator works to express the best possible reading of the material, going beyond literal translation to consider the nuance, sound, and accessibility for the reader. At times, translators must recognize that a literal translation of idiom does not work, but respectable translations offer notes of explanation for these seeming variances from the original text. For most of us who are not studying the texts but reading them for pleasure, relying on the good faith of the translator helps us to center on the tale itself. Powell's translation of Homer's THE ILIAD, in that context, is a solid read. This text will be useful in the classroom, with its maps, its notes, its explanations--all the additional apparatus one would expect of a scholarly translation of an ancient text.

How does it work as a text for reading for pleasure? I can best illustrate the character of Powell's translation by placing it side-by-side with other notable translations. In the passages below, Hector offers his dying words to Achilles, who has just killed him.

Here is the Robert Fitzgerald translation (1974):

Then at the point of death Lord Hektor said:

"I see you now for what you are. No chance
to win you over. Iron in your breast
your heart is. Think a bit, though: this may be
a thing the gods in anger hold against you
on that day when Paris and Apollo
destroy you at the Gates, great as you are."

The Robert Fagles translation (1990) offers this version of the event:

At the point of death, Hector, his helmet flashing,
said, "I know you well--I see my fate before me.
Never a chance that I could win you over . . .
Iron inside your chest, that heart of yours.
But now beware, or my curse will draw god's wrath
upon your head, that day when Paris and lord Apollo--
for all your fighting heart--destroy you at the Scaean Gates!"

One can see right away some differences in these two translations. Fitzgerald presents a different form of delivery. Note, for example, the sentence structure that sounds convoluted in comparison with contemporary English; Fitzgerald's attempt to preserve iambic pentameter to elevate the language of the passage has uneven success. Fagles offers a translation that sounds less stilted, but he also elaborates the scene, preserving detail ("his helmet flashing") and illuminating character insight (Hector knows that he is dying, so of course he sees his fate--Fagles has him say so). Fagles also has Hector offer a more detailed prediction, naming the specific site of Achilles' future downfall. One can see that if the goal is a line-for-line translation, Fitzgerald's text may seem closer, but Fagles offers spirit and zest to his translation without violating the spirit of the story. I find Fagles' translation more successful as a result.

So, how does Powell's translation fit in? Note how his work resembles Fagles':

Then, dying, Hector whose helmet flashed answered:
"I know you too well. I knew this would be--that I could not persuade
you. The heart in your breast is of iron. Only think of this--
that I will become the anger of the gods on that day when Paris
and Phoibos Apollo kill you at the Scaean Gates, though you
are great!"

In his translation, Powell presents Hector as a more self-conscious instrument of the gods, changing his relationship to the gods. In Fagles' translation, Hector believes he "will draw god's wrath," but in Powell's, Hector transforms into anger. Powell has a slightly different take on the character, emphasizing how little choice is afforded any of the actors in this conflict. Powell's Hector, as a result, seems even more doomed.

Practically any translation will offer some degree of variation in character presentation, as the translators work within their own personal understanding and experiences. That means that as readers, we will have preferences. In my case, I prefer the Fagels translation. I find in it a good balance of poetic, illustrative language, and solid drama. I like the idea that Hector has a bit of a poet in him, and "Iron inside your chest, that heart of yours" has a more musical and expressive quality than "The heart in your breast is of iron"--at least to my ear, and to see "Only think of this" when the translator means "Think only of this" throws me off.

Nevertheless, Powell has made a remarkable, respectable accomplishment with his translation of THE ILIAD, and I am confident that it will find its way into numerous classrooms. Those who have an appreciation of classic stories will find a great deal to admire in this work. It has been a pleasure to hear this story again from a different, invested voice.

Workmanlike, but no poetry
By Geoff Arnold
I first encountered The Iliad 50 years ago, in my Greek class at a very traditional English Grammar School. (Do they even teach Greek in school these days?) We learned to translate various (carefully-selected) passages in the original Greek, and to give these fragments some context we were also encouraged to read a parallel English-Greek edition. I don't remember whose translation it was, but I have a clear memory of the flowing poetry and excitement in the English version. I'm sure that it deviated quite significantly from the original, but it was thrilling.

This new edition is very careful, scrupulously documented, and uncompromisingly accurate. I enjoyed the academic discussion; what I missed was any real poetry. Maybe it was never there in the first place: maybe earlier translations imposed their own ideas of poetry, in the same way that Disney imposed its sensibility on so many classic children's stories. But I missed it.

A bit informal
By Anonymouse
Critiquing a new translation of a noted book is done on three levels. The first two are scholarly: the comparison of the translation with the original and the comparison of the new translation with those that have come before. The third is the aesthetic evaluation of the work itself. My knowledge of The Iliad is non-professional. I have been fascinated by myths and mythology since I was a child reading Bullfinch at my grandmother's house, so the chance to read a new translation of The Iliad is appealing. My reading, though, is from a lay perspective.

Powell's Introduction is wonderfully informative and worth reading if you ever come across the book. In it he discusses the oral tradition of the Greeks and how poetry worked, which is similar to the blues and folk music traditions of our era. Poets (and musicians) draw on mental libraries of set pieces to tailor the performance to the tastes of the audience. But while music historians can trace the evolution and repetition of forms, phrases, and motifs for hundreds of years, not much Greek poetry exists for scholarly analysis. Adhering to modern academic standards, Powell is clear about his knowledge gaps and the liberties he has taken when fashioning this translation. All very good.

I am a bit unhappy, though, about the text, although I'll say again, I am speaking as a reader, not a scholar. Powell, in choosing an updated idiom, has, in some cases, chosen awkward sentences, weak locutions and jarring words that made my reading experience less pleasant than I wanted it to be. Rather in the way that new editions of the Christian Bible or Book of Common Prayer sound rough compared to their well-known predecessors, Powell's translation sometimes seems too modern. It isn't that I require a classic to sound "classical" but sometimes an older form is more comfortable. Two examples in the text:

1. The Argives gathered. The place of assembly was in turmoil. The earth groaned beneath the people as they took their seats. The din was terrific. Seven heralds, hollering, held them back - "if you stop the hullabaloo, you can hear the god-nourished chieftains."

Here Powell makes three word choices with strong aesthetic value: hollering, hullabaloo, and god-nourished. "God-nourished" is likely to be directly from the Greek, there is no modern equivalent and, as explained in the Introduction, these kinds of descriptions flattered the audience who were themselves chieftains who would probably like to consider themselves "god-nourished." A very modern translation would possibly be "god blessed," but "god-nourished" is an excellent image.

"Holler" and "hullabaloo," though, I find odd and too informal. There was a 1965 TV show called Hullabaloo, but it was not until I looked it up that I realized that I had confused Hullabaloo with 1969's idiotic country comedy HeeHaw. (Hullabaloo was also a 1940 musical comedy film.) In my mind "hullabaloo" is a low class word, as is "holler," especially as a homonym of the Appalachian dialect word "holler." I find it curious that Powell, an American of similar age with a somewhat similar set of mental links, chose these dicey words over "shouted" and "clamor."

2. Another word choice I do not care for is "shivery," which Powell uses many times as "shivery", "shivers", "shivered." One online dictionary defines "shivery" as "shaking or trembling as a result of cold, illness, fear, or excitement." Well, which is it? Context does not help because fear and excitement are antonyms. Thus we can put some form of "frightening" or "exhilarating" in every instance of "shiver" and come up with a coherent sentence, but choosing the same face for each occurrence does not work out well. I am unhappy with this ambiguity.

One other point: Ian Morris does Powell no favor by using the "riddle, mystery, enigma" clich in his introduction.

Although I have reservations about the text, these are personal and aesthetic. Overall, I think this book is a required addition to the scholar's shelf. The Introduction provides very welcome information for the lay reader and the use of a more modern idiom will perhaps make this edition more accessible to a contemporary reader or student.

I received this review copy of The Iliad, a new translation by Bary P. Powell (Oxford University Press) through NetGalley.com.

Somewhat heavy on theory
By Jure Kodžoman
What this book does is show you how librarians fit into 21st century. The book does very good promotion of IA itself, and shows why it's important.

The first half of the book is somewhat theoretical and hard to read. However, it's really worth reading. It will explain some concepts (thesaurus, categorization,...) librarians have used for a very long time, and how to easily used them while designing web sites.

The second part is where the book gets more practical and actually shows how to use IA in practice, which was, at least for me, the more interesting part. If you are in any way connected to web development, you should read this book.

The entire book is exactly what it says it is - "Designing large-scale web sites". Although some concepts can be applied to smaller sites, you will hardly find resources to make use of some of the things authors talk about.

There are many books on usability out there, but this one is dedicated to findability. If these terms are new to you, I recommend you read Steve Krug's "Don't Make Me Think" and Jakob Nielsen's "Prioritizing Web Usability" before reading this book. It might make it easier to read, and the book will definitely make more sense to you.

At last! A concise, practical guide to web site design!
By John Leo Mencias
I had been looking around for a book like this for some time now: one that guides me through the crucial conceptual design phase of web site development. Most books on web site design are really about user interface design. This book offers a top-down planning approach to getting from the recognition of a need for a web site through to the final working design. It plugs up a lot of the gaping holes that topic-specific design texts leave open.
The over-riding concern and emphasis in the first section of the book is on how to organize the information on the web site in such a way that the target audience can readily get at it. To this end, the authors focus on three 'systems' that need to be developed, implemented and coordinated on a web site: a navigation system, a labeling system and a searching system. Once these systems are thought through and designed then the rest of the work becomes a matter of filling in the information content, functionalities and the bells and whistles.
Clear, concise and even a bit humorous, this book will definitely give you a peace of mind if you find yourself a bit overwhelmed at times when deciding on just how you will approach building a web site.

Kudos to Rosefeld and Morville
By K. Mohnkern
A book on web design written by librarians. Skeptical? So was I. But darned if they don't hit the ol' web design nail right on the ol' head. (Okay, they're not really librarians - but both authors come from a Library Science background.) When I started on my Interaction Design masters degree, there wasn't anything written sepcifically about it. So my education was based on other fields - architecture, rhetoric, psychology, graphic design. Now we're starting to see some good Interaction Design books coming from experts in those other fields.
The strength of this book is its emphasis on defining a navigable structure for a site. It covers structure, navigation, searching/browsing, and this is the first book I've seen that spends a whole chapter on button and link labelling systems. It's added labelling to my ID vocabulary.
I do agree with another reviewer who wanted more in-depth examples, but with enough web experience it's easy to come up with examples on our own. So I gave the book the fifth star.
This and Jennifer Fleming's Web Navigation (both O'Reilly books) are must-haves for web designers.

"At last - a money management book that is not intimidating or boring. Ryan Jones has made a complex subject easier to understand and follow. I am especially excited for all independent traders" -- Glen Ring, President, Glen Ring Enterprises editor of View on Futures newsletter

"Money management is the most overlooked part of trading, but is the key to building enormous wealth. Ryan Jones first overviews classical methods and then discusses a new paradigm which, combined with a reliable trading method, can lead to financial security." -- Murray Ruggiero, President, Ruggiero & Associates contributing editor, Futures magazine

From the Inside Flap
"If traders plan on making serious money in [the] markets, it will boil down to one thing: how they manage their money. Outside of sheer luck, no one will make a tremendous amount of money.without a proper money management strategy. This is the basis of this book." -from the Preface Not a week goes by that investment experts don't offer us more "winning" trading methods and systems. Some work better than others, but they all seem to stop working sooner or later. To obtain-and maintain-an edge on a regular basis, savvy traders need an effective money/risk management plan. Based on sound trading principles, The Trading Game gives investors proven risk management techniques that are not only easy to understand and apply, but can lead to consistent and regular profits. Written by Ryan Jones, whose seminars on risk management are eagerly attended by traders nationally, this groundbreaking book shows you step-by-step how to increase your trading profits without necessarily increasing the performance of your trading system or method. By using the management techniques described, you can reap greater profits whether the method wins 25 percent of the time, 40 percent of the time, or 90 percent of the time. Unlike other books on risk management that tend to be loaded down with complicated formulas and technical jargon, The Trading Game presents the topic in a way that is clear, concise, and practical. Covering the why's, what's, when's, and how's, it walks you through the entire risk management process with complete details on everything from margin requirements and fixed fractional trading to market weighting and protecting profits. Along with a complete, workable method for making $1 million in five years or less, you'll find straightforward guidelines on determining how many trades to place, analyzing what their maximum drawdowns should be, and combining different markets and different systems for diversification. You'll also learn to assess whether you're a conservative or aggressive trader, what your goals are, and the degree to which you're able to tolerate risk. An invaluable guide for every trader and sophisticated investor, The Trading Game offers a powerful array of solutions to one of the most puzzling problems in trading: how to keep losses small so that profits accrue.

Get A Nauzer Balsara, Bennett McDowell, Or Ralph Vince Book Before Getting This One
By Amazon Book Lover
It's always been surprising to me that this book sells so well and the classics are not as popular. The sensational sub-title "Playing by the Numbers to Make MILLIONS" must convince readers that Jones can give them the secret to becoming a millionaire.

Thing is he doesn't give you any secrets to success, instead he sends you in the wrong direction by stating that "risk of ruin" isn't important and that the "Jones Fixed Fractional" approach is better than the standard "optimal F". Neither claims are true, and you'd be better off learning about "risk of ruin" from Balsara and about "optimal F" from Vince, the true grand daddy's of money management. If Vince and Balsara are too complicated, a newer author, McDowell, simplifies both of these concepts so that you can get on the right track.

A Trader's Money Management System: How to Ensure Profit and Avoid the Risk of Ruin (Wiley Trading)

The Handbook of Portfolio Mathematics: Formulas for Optimal Allocation & Leverage (Wiley Trading)

Money Management Strategies for Futures Traders (Wiley Finance)

Check out the review of Ryan Jones book "Apples and Oranges" dated July 7, 2001, that reviewer has a real understanding of money management and what works and explains the flaws of Jones' book with great clarity. At the end of the day, you'd be better off getting a Vince, Balsara or McDowell book if you want to improve your trading results.

PS: If you look at the back flap of Jones's book jacket in "The Trading Game - Playing by the Numbers to Make MILLIONS" you will see him say that he says his book gives you "...a complete, workable method for making $1 million in five years or less..." then on page 232 in his "A Final Thought" he says "...Open a $10,000 account and day-trade the S&P when you feel lucky if you want. But when that money is gone (and it most likely will be) do not alter the plan. Do not pollute the plan...".

If he is teaching effective money management - then why on earth does he believe that his students will lose their entire trading capital? Very odd indeed -- he lures readers in to buy the book with a "get rich quick" title and book jacket text -- then tells them that they'll "most likely" lose all of their money -- but remember -- even after they lose all their money he doesn't want them to alter the plan or pollute the plan.

That just doesn't make any sense.

compulsory book
By observer
This book contains virtually all information on money management methods. And more. And though the tables are at times tiring, overall presentation is clear, short and no-nonsense. The author presents existing methods of position sizing and then presents his, Fixed Ratio. I think that for small trading accounts this method is the most suitable in terms of the balance of risk and reward.

Other parts of the book are equally good. The chapters on consecutive wins/losses, optimisation, trading systems, portfolios are valuable and interesting. The whole book is written from probabilistic point of view. It is based on maths, even though the examples and calculations are very basic.

Even if one disagrees with author's ideas, this book is one of those few that are compulsory for serious traders.

Gestion Monetaria - Excelente
By Antonio Mangas

1* MALO, a evitar
2* NORMAL, no cuenta nada nuevo
3* BUENO, sin ser una obra maestra esta bien
4* MUY BUENO. Hay que leerlo
5* OBRA MAESTRA. Imprescindible

Review
Running an office for about 16 psychologists, I find myself reading a ton of self help books to recommend to the therapists for their patients. I must say, I have never read a book as honest as Socially Accepted. The author lays it all out there without holding back. It's extremely refreshing to have such straight forward help without any sugar coating. Not only will this be very helpful for young people who have a hard time being social but it was HILARIOUS. It's like no other self-help book I've read & I've read quite a bit of them. I really enjoyed it! --Gabriella Reyes

Socially Accepted had a very unique tone. At parts it was inspiring, motivating, comical, formal, and informal. It was as if you were having dinner with a friend you lost touch with hearing stories, lessons, advice, and wisdom. This book was definitely one that was difficult to put down. I finished it in 4 reading sessions. I could've finished it in one but since it was split into four parts it made it easy for me. This would make a great gift. --Alex Dolsen

An insightful book that one can really apply to everyday life. I feel like it contributed a lot to me in the sense it improved my comfortability when dealing with common or irregular social situations. Easy read and had me laughing half the time.--Eric Zambrano

I recently graduated with a Master from Penn State in Psychology. I'm a big reader and it was a very easy read. The author was very good at explaining his points. I have to give it to the body language chapter, that really was eye opening for me. It was a fun read will definitely read it again a couple months from now. Even had me laughing out loud at some points. Definitely do not regret buying this book. --Chandler Perry

a lot of the first half is common sense stuff for the benefit of the really truly horribly socially awkward
By Bridget Magnus
Three things to know about this book. First, the author is male -- not a problem but it does mean that a lot of his advice is geared towards men. In fact, he admits this fact. Second, a lot of the first half is common sense stuff for the benefit of the really truly horribly socially awkward. But hey, there's a foundation to build upon for those that need it. Finally, I found the last half more insightful.

Want to be a bro?
By casey freeman
This book is like listening to a bro talk about how cool he is and how many chicks he's been with. I should have read the reviews first, as I thought this was a book about actually being socially awkward in today's society-my fault. I think the author read The Game by Neil Strauss, but has nowhere near the writing style. He is full of so much self pride I had to put the book down and say some foul words about him. If you really need help meeting women, look for any other self-help book than this

In one way or another, EVERYONE needs this book!
By Michael Santiago
This book came directly from the author's heart and you will be able to tell as soon as you begin to read it! Not only will this book give you the courage to be yourself and not stray away from situations for fear of being rejected, but it will open doors to countless experiences you would have never been able to encounter while being socially uninvolved. I recommend everyone, even if you already think you are a socially involved person, to read this book. Amazing job!

Death Loves Me Not, by Marian Tee

16-year-old Eden Velasco is haunted - by a girl with a face-splitting smile, by one who likes to hang on to her window sills at night, and by another who chokes on her own ashes. Sometimes, Eden wonders if it's just better to bite her wrist and bleed herself to death. Eden has tried hard to fake being normal, recording episodes of MTV reality shows that she never watches and covering her walls with posters of boy bands she can't even name. And she can't see ghosts. She can't. Yet everything Eden's worked hard for starts to unravel when a dead little girl with paper eyes starts stalking her, leaving dead bodies in her wake. And before Eden knows it, the men in white have straitjacketed her back to the cold place. St. Dymphna's Institute of Mental Illnesses and Disorders is a place where it is winter all year long without the snow, where ghosts come and go and every one of them is not right. As the lines between reality and blood-stained dreams continue to blur, Eden finds herself playing Pied Piper to bitter spirits who blame her for their murders. Demanding vengeance that Eden feels she's incapable of giving, they come after her day and night until Eden's pushed to the brink of truly losing her sanity, abandoning her soul, and becoming what everyone once accused her of being: a child of the Devil.

A Scare a Minute!
By Gerald Clauson AKA Redwing
Looking for a good scare? Want a story that makes you think twice about turning out the lights? Well, this is it! Death Loves Me Not wastes no time with a ghost haunting our heroine from the opening pages. Ms. Tee introduces us to Eden, and right away, your heart goes out to this young woman. Who among us didn't feel 'different' or left out, in our teenage years? Was there never a time when your parents didn't 'get' you? Of course, Eden faces so much more than simple teen angst.

Whether we share Eden's helplessness at her failure to save one girl, or when to our horror, hundreds die, or her wonder when she realizes Stud loves her, this story has it all. And danger lurks around every page. Interwoven we find true friendship, love, and budding romance. As I learned when reading Ms. Tee's romance books, she is a true master of tugging at the heart strings (When Saffi March lost her baby, I mean...I... sorry, got a little sidetracked there. Just read 'When Fangirls Cry, o.k.?)

As a fan of horror from the likes of Koontz, and King, this is one of the most original tales of this genre I have encountered. Nothing is truly obvious, and we are kept guessing about everything, from the true nature of Will and Stud, to the identity of the little girl in pink. While reading Death Loves Me Not, the flashlight, and the 1911, were never far from hand. Chilling!

Gerald Clauson (Redwing)

Creepy and Scary
By Paula Odom
I really loved this book. I was on the fence about buying this book at first, I mean what would a romance author know about writing a horror? Well she completely blow that thought out of the water within the first couple of chapters. The book is a great late night read, plus it scared me and creeped me out at the same time. What more could you ask for in a horror?

While I adore both Marian Tee's YA romances and her adult ones, this book is what made me a loyal fan. She took this story line and made it into something new and fresh. I would defiantly buy any other books she writes, they are just that good.

Not bad...
By Conni J
...but it would benefit from another pass through the hands of an editor.

The story, overall, is interesting, somewhat suspenseful, and not really like anything else I have read. The author gives you just enough information to keep you interested, without spoiling it with too much backstory at any one time. The creepy moments are just creepy enough to make you wonder what might be hiding in the shadows or under your bed when you're not looking.

My main complaints, and I have two:
The first is with the editing. There are numerous misspellings and words missing completely from sentences. They weren't glaring problems, but just noticeable enough that it detracted from a smooth read. And it seemed to get a little worse the farther into the story you got.
My other complaint had to do with time transition in the story. I found myself lost a couple of times in the jump from present to past and had to backtrack to make sure I hadn't missed anything. It wasn't as seamless as it could have been, but it wasn't a deal-breaker, either.

All in all, if you're looking for a supernatural story, just chock full of ghosts and demons and murder, this is your baby. The story line is a fresh take on the genre and is handled in such a way as to keep you turning (scrolling) pages to find out what happens next.
But if you're a stickler for the perfectly edited, you might want to wait it out for the update.

Four stars for a creepy read, and I'll be checking out some of the other titles from this author.
