Good, but not enough detail for some areas of law

This is a very good book, however I would caution exam candidates to not rely only on this book for the essay portion of the exam. Some areas of law are not covered in adequate detail. This is clear when you compare information in the book to past exams. As one example, the book barely touches on the 5th amendment, however there are past exams which required detailed analysis of 5th amendment issues. Overall I really like the book and it is a good SUPPLEMENT. In fact its brevity is part of what makes it appealing when you want to just get a broad overview. But again, I wouldn't recommend using only this book for essays.

This book is the reason I passed the CA bar

After paying over a thousand dollars for a commerical test prep course (Themis), I failed every single essay on the July 2013 CA bar exam. With just this book and the past exams available for free on the CA bar website, I passed the February 2014 exam.

I found that Themis' course wasted so much time "teaching" every minute detail of the law that it left me with little energy for the single most important test-prep strategy: TAKE AS MANY PRACTICE EXAMS AS POSSIBLE. PERIOD.

This book helps you with this most-important strategy for the following reasons:

(1) The rule outlines provide all the rules you need to know, written very concisely in the way the bar examiners want you to regurgitate them on the exam.

(2) The book includes 6 sample essay questions for each subject with answer outlines that identify the "must-get" issues, making self-grading your own essays a breeze.

(3) If you're having trouble with analysis, there are couple sample answers for each subject written by the actual author (i.e., not student samples) that you can learn from and practice imitating.

In short, this book is the reason I passed the bar exam.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

This is the best book for the studying the essay portion of the CA bar. I love it more than Bar Bri. Bar Bri books are dense and overwhelming. This book makes each topic approachable and easy to understand. It also has topic checklists for you to memorize so that when you walk into an exam you just write out those checklists and you won't miss an issue. I also love how each topic has at least 6 practice essays from past bar exams and explanations for each essay. It really helps to see how to write an essay on each topic. Plus there are issue matrixes that show you how often each topic has been tested. Everyone of my friends studying for the bar has gotten this book and loved it. I highly recommend this book, but note that this is only for the essay portion. This does not cover MBE nuances or the performance test. I passed the CA bar exam on my first try, even though my GPA was ranked at the bottom of my class.

The Dirlewanger Brigade was an anti-partisan unit of the Nazi army, reporting directly to Heinrich Himmler. Under the leadership of Oskar Dirlewanger, a convicted rapist and alcoholic, they could do as they pleased: there were no repercussions for even their worst behavior. This was the group used for its special “talents” to help put down the Jewish uprising of the Warsaw Ghetto, killing an estimated 35,000 men, women, and children in a single day. Even by Nazi standards, the brigade was considered unduly violent and an investigation of its activities was opened. The Nazi hierarchy was eager to distance itself from the behavior of the brigade and eventually exiled many of the members to Belarus. Based on the archives from Germany, Poland, and Russia, The SS Dirlewanger Brigade offers an unprecedented look at one of the darkest chapters of World War II.

There is not a lot of books out there on Dirlewanger in English. French Maclean wrote one and that's about it that I know of.

This book is short and was probably written as a Doctoral thesis. The author tried to write it with a sociological/psychological slant rather than a straight history of the unit. That works in some places but reads like filler in others. He used three primary sources and filled in the rest with other research.

The author admits the source material is spotty and for some periods of time there is no record. This isn't unusual for a unit like this and he does do a good job of placing them when there is a record. Most of this was when Dirlewanger's unit was working specific named SS-Police anti-partisan operations.

The author also covers the units transfer to Slovakia towards the end of the war. He also covers the different versions of the unit as the personnel changed from the original convicted poachers to whatever material was available that no other unit would accept.

What did make me crazy was the author not stating what Police Battalion or Regiment Dirlewanger's unit was working with. I also thought there could have been far more information about his role in the liquidation of Jews and others.

Edit: I have a copy of the flight log for the pilot assigned to EG B that places Dirlewanger in the early stages of the war. He was, to me at least, being flown to locations to receive orders to sensitive to be transmitted any other way.

The book also mentions Hans Siegling, a man who was everywhere in the east when mass murder was required. What the author does not mention is his earlier work in EG A as a Hauptmann in a Police Battalion.

Psyschological study not history.

Rather dry with terribly long hunting analogies, non-linear chapters, no true history of the unit, very little detail of atrocities committed. Very bland history. This vook will not hold your attention and is a bore to read.

The Eastern Front has always captivated me, the sheer brutality and hatred on both sides, two warped ideologies battling each other and all the unfortunate civilians trapped between them. There is not much material available on the Dirlewanger Brigade so when I saw this it caught my eye. Overall, I found this to be an extremely difficult read. Nothing to do with comprehension simply I found the material to be extremely dry and it never held my attention for more than a few pages at a time. It's also more of psychological study of the Brigade rather than a straight history. Don't get me wrong, it is a very well written book, but I like my history more linear and more personal. There are also no pictures/maps, which was a disappointment. When reading about specific individuals/units I like to put faces with the names/words. I should have listened to the other reviewers such as Stephen Campbell. He is absolutely correct when he says "This book is short and was probably written as a Doctoral thesis. The author tried to write it with a sociological/psychological slant rather than a straight history of the unit.". While the book certainly does touch on the history its primary focus is the sociological/psychological aspects of how the Brigade was formed (from poachers, to criminals and finally even communists), it's motivations and its actions. If you enjoy reading Doctoral Thesis then you may find this book extremely interesting, personally I didn't.

Like Bruce Campbell and Elizabeth Lack's A Dictionary of Birds ( LJ 7/85), The Encyclopedia of Birds is superbly written, edited, and illustrated. Many of the same authors have written on the same subjects in both books. An important difference is that the Dictionary is arranged alphabetically, while the Encyclopedia is organized by taxonomic order. The Encyclopedia contains an index, but due to the sometimes confusing classification of birds, its format may still make it difficult to use. In addition, the Dictionary is more detailed and extensive, and includes references at the end of long definitions. But the Encyclopedia 's large color photographs, which are often strikingly beautiful, will be useful to both amateurs and professionals. While the Dictionary is a necessity for most academic libraries, both books are highly recommended to public libraries with large reference collections. Nicholas J. This book is just what it says, an encyclopedia. I should have read up more on this book before I bought it. It is a good book, but not what I was looking for. Lot of reading and about birds all over the world. I was looking to identify birds around our area.

If Bird Watching Simply Isn't Enough For You

The problem with birding books is that they mostly just tell you what a given bird looks like. If your curiosity about feathered creatures goes beyond just appearances here is the book for you. It's a big, 450-page book that is packed with information. This is not just a big picture book, though it is full of beautiful color shots. It's mainly a reference book that describes, by species, birds' lives in detail, covering such topics as mating, nesting, communication, feeding, and socialization. There are many fascinating sidebars, such as the one describing why owls have such broad heads, and the one on the Hoatzin chick's claws on its wings that enable it to climb around trees while still an infant. There is excellent material on how various birds have developed features that have enabled them to adapt to their environment - probably the best know example being the beaks of finches.
And, best of all, this encyclopedia is interestingly written. It's informative, but not drearily academic. It's one of those books that you can just open up to any page and find yourself reading something truly fascinating about birds. Highly recommended.

Poorly organized.

There is a great deal of fascinating, and very useful information here, and if the writing style is a bit didactic, it's hardly soporific. Still, it would seem to me that an "encyclopedia" should be organized in some way (preferably alphabetically) that is comprehensible to the layman. Granted, there's a fairly good index that allows one to find the entry that one is looking for, but the book as a whole is apparently organized by order and suborder, which makes it impossible for the layman to pick up the book and find a given entry in a reasonable amount of time. This strikes me as a fairly serious flaw. For example, we start with ostriches, rheas, emus and cassowaries, progress through kiwis and tinamous, progress to penguins, loons, and grebes; hummingbirds are roughly halfway through the book, and we finish with crows. Jays have no entry of their own, but are lumped with crows, as sparrows are lumped with buntings, tanagers, waxbirds and weavers. It's very difficult to find the method to this madness.
Granted, three stars is a bit low for this book, but four would have been too high.
If you need a reference book on birds that has a lot of information, and are willing to spend the time sorting through the incomprehensible organization to find that information, this is an excellent choice, but if you want a quick "field guide" that not only gives good information but that is easy to use, this would be a bad choice.

The Community-Based Social Marketing steps and tools presented in Fostering Sustainable Behavior introduced me to a new way of approaching changing norms. Some of the concepts seem basic but with the hustle of daily life I sometimes forget to approach challenges in a positive, structured nature. The idea our society has become so complex that education alone does not promote change is a challenge I face daily. Without continual reinforcement, reminders, and sometimes firing workers who cannot follow the simplest instructions such as not smoking onsite makes me realize it is not just the construction field facing these challenges!

The case studies focused mainly on social diffusion, prompts, and commitment. `Canada's "Turn it Off" Campaign' relied on commitment from motorists, stickers, and ultimately social diffusion by influencing others to participate so they would feel as if they were part of the group. Social diffusion was also shown to be effective in the `Protecting Watersheds' case study by direct communication and literature distribution. `The Reducing Outdoor Water Use' case study also proved commitment, direct communication, and prompts were the most effective way to foster social norms in a community. Commitments were again proved successful in the `Using Email to Change Behavior' by communicating regularly to ensure DEP staff was following through with their commitment. This method is also very cost efficient!

The other two case studies `Increasing Hotel Towel Reuse' used descriptive norms as means to encourage energy conservation while `Making Biking Convenient' case study did not address anything besides convenience as a strategy. Overall, the case studies proved sustainable practices can become a norm through different strategies. I felt as if the case studies could have included more information to encompass all five steps. The book reiterates the same topics and I felt as if the organization could use improvement. For example, focus groups are referenced in Step 2 and Step 3, but I felt the statements about financial reimbursement were unnecessary and none of the case studies utilized focus groups.

Very thoughtful, clear and practical

Green technologies is one thing, but it is quite another to have people adopt green behavior regardless of whether they use green technologies or not. I was on the look out for some time for substantial information on the latter topic, with case studies showing what has been proven to work or not to work. I found my answers in this book by Doug McKenzie-Mohr. Besides being comprehensive, lucid, and clearly written, this book includes citations to original studies for all its claims (a tremendous resource to the academician like myself!) and a step-by-step method for encouraging green behavior. I am now using this book for student projects in my sustainable engineering course.
