Thus begins this literary fairy tale of a witch who takes into her home an ugly, abandoned infant whom she calls Lump. Wise in the ways of magic, the witch is inexpert in the ways of motherhood and so she appoints, in turn, a bear as his nursemaid and a djinni as his tutor. As predicted by her cat familiar, all does not go well and the witch is forced to give up her magic to save the boy. The adolescent Lump, far from being grateful for her sacrifice, becomes increasingly troublesome. Gruber incorporates well-known tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, and Rumplestiltskin into his narrative, giving readers a different, and sometimes more frightening, take on these childhood staples. The inclusion of these retellings and the elegance with which the author shapes his fable will appeal to readers who love to immerse themselves in the complex reworked fairy tales of Donna Jo Napoli. Gruber, the author of several adult thrillers, has done much more than offer a well-structured adventure, full of mystery and magic--though he certainly does all that. He also plumbs the depths of the human heart and lays bare its emotions in a way that causes readers to respond instinctively. The story begins when a witch finds a baby so ugly that the note with it reads, "the devil's child for the devil's wife." The witch has no business with a child, but she fancies it, so she gets a bear to be its nanny and a hideous djinni to tutor it. Then she continues her life in service to her goddess. The more the witch underestimates parental responsibilities, the more hurt and angry the boy, Lump, becomes. Gruber cleverly weaves elements from familiar fairy tales into a saga that moves across forest, earth, and sea. But even more astute is his portrayal of the characters, especially Lump and his mother, who, locked in their own selfishness, must fight through disappointment, hatred, and anger to find forgiving love. This can be read at several levels, but those who plumb the deepest will reap the greatest reward. Ilene Cooper

This Fairy Tale not only describes its own story it also incorporates many other classic fairy tales from Little Red Riding Hood to Pinocchio, each one with an added twist. Lump is the witch's boy. Abandoned at birth and taken in by a misunderstood witch. He grows up in a world of magic. He is taught by an enslaved djin and nursed by a bear. He grows up with very wrong views about people and the world. Lump thinks he is handsome but truth be told he is not handsome at all. When he finds out and is made fun of and harassed he wishes everyone who had hurt him would burn. When Lumps actions with the humans turn horribly wrong the witch and the boy must flee the sacred woods they had once enjoyed.

Thus Lump is sent on a journey through many worlds and many places. After losing what he truly loves, he hides himself behind a mask of gold and surrounds himself with riches and blames everything on his mother. After abusing life he is cast from the world only to be given a second chance in which he finds himself and the people who truly love him.

Michael Gruber writes about very strong emotions and creates very strong characters. His book has many twists and turns and you never know what's around the next bend.

I would recommend this book. Although it is a bit slow in the beginning it begins to get more and more interesting, and slowly but surely it lures you in. My favorite part of this book is how he incorporated all the other fairy tales and gave them his own twist.

A haunting tale of magic, mystery, growth, and love

One lovely spring morning, a witch ventures out to collect her daily herbs. Much to her surprise, she finds a baby in a basket outside her door. But this is no ordinary baby; it is the ugliest child anyone has ever seen, and tied to its basket is a note: "the devil's child for the devil's wife." The witch is taken aback: "Witches are supposed to eat babies, not feed them," she says. But she surprises herself by feeling an odd fondness for the ugly child, who she names Lump, and she assembles a sort of family to help her care for the boy: a she-bear, a malevolent demon, and her familiar, a cat named Falance.

As Lump grows, he struggles to find his own magical powers and his relationship to the other humans nearby. In the meantime, his foster mother has the same problems as working mothers everywhere: how to balance her time between tending the Midsummer fires and caring for her child. The witch, who is more powerful than Lump understands, is mystified by motherhood. She thinks, "I have always known what to do; I see the Pattern clear as my own hand, and I follow it and am content. But there is no guide here, and every path I can see leads to some pain. Perhaps this is part of having a child; the Pattern is of no use, and there is this aching in my heart."

Soon enough, disaster strikes, and Lump, the witch, and Falance hit the road. Robbed of her powers when she makes the ultimate sacrifice for her child, the witch must find a new life for herself: "It is the case that I cannot be both a mother and a witch, or not the sort of witch I was." In the meantime, Lump grows more distant, demanding, and hard to love. Fashioning themselves as The Faeryland Outcasts, the three perform magic and meet dozens of characters who will be vaguely familiar to readers from other fairy tales.

THE WITCH'S BOY, though, is far more than a fractured fairy tale. Although many of the characters, settings, and situations are borrowed from folklore, the complexities of plot and theme go far beyond simple fairy stories. The conflicted relationship between mother and son, the psychological pain inflicted on the boy Lump, the ways all the characters must step out of themselves to find friendship and love, the unexpected places where magic is found --- all these elements elevate THE WITCH'S BOY from a simple fairy story to a haunting, fully developed tale of magic, mystery, growth, and love.

About the Author
Christopher Jamison is former abbot of Worth Abbey, a Benedictine monastery near London. He is also president of the International Commission on Benedictine Education and sits on the Council of the Alliance for International Monasticism, a body that promotes links between monasteries across the North/South divide. He is author of Finding Sanctuary: Monastic Steps for Everyday Life and was the host of the popular BBC documentary series The Monastery.

Finding Happiness by the Process of Elimination

Interestiong book. It's written by Abbott Christopher Jamison, host of "The Monastery" -a documentary BBC television series. The basic idea that runs through the book is that happiness comes to people indirectly as the fruit of defeating the causes of our unhappiness. To that end, a major chunk of the book is spent discussing "eight thoughts" to get you heading in the right direction (acedia, gluttony, lust, greed, anger, sadness, vanity, and pride).

No "happiness formula" here, just at lot of good wisdom of a religious flavor. Readers wanting a more scientific look at happiness might be better off with a book like "Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World".

Happiness, Monk Style

This is a follow-up to FINDING SANCTUARY by Abbot Christopher Jamison, and is just as good.

Jamison starts with an interesting "history" of happiness and from there develops a strong case for the stepping stones to living a fulfilled life, by overcoming the 8 negative thoughts.

These are acedia(sloth), gluttony, lust, greed, anger, sadness, vanity and pride.
Astute readers will notice that one of the originial 7 deadly sins, ENVY, isn't on the list. The way to overcome the negative thoughts is by practicing the corresponding 8 virtues, which are spiritual awareness, moderation, chaste love, generosity, gentleness, gladness, magnanimity, and humility.

The chapters are all well written and easy to comprehend. The one on Sadness is the best, with Jamison keenly noting that sadness can indeed be "survived."

The one thing I would disagree with is that anger and sadness are automatically negative thoughts. Some anger is plainly wrong and sinful, but some isn't. And sometimes we have clearly valid reasons for being sad.

Ultimately, as Jamison points out, Happiness isn't "..an object to be grasped but a lifelong process that culminates in a happy death." (pg.177)

This is an easy to read book based on the writings of John Cassian, interspersed with the Abbot's observations living in Sussex. Those with a contemplative bent will benefit greatly but also anyone who wishes to live a more fulfilled life.

Based on the writings of John Cassian

Finding Happiness, by Abbot Christopher Jamison, is a nicely written book based on the writings of John Cassian, who was the first person to systematically write down the teachings of the desert monks and nuns. The first was St. Antony of Egypt, who as a 20 year old in 271 AD, went into the desert to live a religious life to discover himself and GOD. Over the next few centuries, the desert monks and nuns discovered authentic insights about the interior world. In the fourth century, John Cassian wrote about these insights calling the Eight Thoughts or the eight principle obstacles to perfection.

Abbot Jamison explains the Eight Thoughts an easy-to-read style with anecdotes and commentaries from modern life in England. He also brings his experiences with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to compliment the religious explanations. His writing has a Roman Catholic undertone, but is fairly balanced and informative.

The book starts with the history of happiness and the problems on how happiness id defined. What I found most eye-opening was the continued influence of Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics on our definition of happiness. Illustrating the eight thoughts with comparisons of modern issues, Abbot Jamison brings these into the daily routine of life for those in and out of the monastery.

Brilliant

This book is yet another deep, original and controversial contribution of Hannah Arendt to twentieth century political theory. In this book, Arendt analyzes the phenomenon of revolution by focusing almost exclusively on the great XVIIIth century revolutions, the American and the French. Arendt's deep insights allow her to compare, both on a theoretical and a practical level, the similarities and differences between the two and on how and why the American Revolution allowed the foundation of freedom while the French failed miserably in this attempt almost from the beginning. The great themes in this book are the social question (necessity) in its relation to politics (the realm of freedom) and the ever-present distinction between liberation and freedom properly speaking. Thus, constitutions and their significance, the problem of secular law in relation to its need for an Absolute with which to provide a foundation for it, the problem of hypocrisy and Robespierre's Terror, and insightful interpretations of some of the Founding Fathers' political thought (though in my opinion a bit too far reaching in her inferences thereof), are all issues with which she deals with in this book and which are rounded up in a great closing chapter. Deep, powerful, perceptive, intense: like most of Arendt's writings, a must read for anyone interested in political thought and theory.

The Classic 20th Century Study On Revolution

I first read this brilliant and classic study of the nature of revolutions as a college student in the late 1960s, when a cultural revolution was indeed occurring in the U.S. After watching the media coverage of today's angry protesters against unregulated capitalism, it was well worth re-reading.

Dr. Arendt analyzes the implications of 3 major revolutions, the American, French and Russian. The only truly successful one was the American, because it was grounded in the ideals of the Enlightenment, as well as the classical values espoused by the Founding Fathers. The French and Russian revolutions were rooted in class hatred and resentment of exploitation, a sentiment that is chillingly becoming a reality today. She herself lived through the terror of being a Jew in 1930s Germany, and barely escaped deportation to a concentration camp. Although her writing style is always disciplined, her own experience, in my opinion, colors her analysis of the French and Russian revolutions: violent uprising often leads to an even more repressive form of government that the one overthrown.

Her analysis of the success of the American Revolution, and the ensuing chaos and bloodshed that followed the French and Russian, is still among the most important political observations of the 20th century. A classic, and a prescient warning in our economically unstable time.

On "On Revolution"

On Revolution by Hannah Arendt is a philosophical study of the nature of revolutions, mainly focusing on the French and American revolutions. A big portion of her analysis involves the "Social Question" involved in revolutions. How do revolutions start? Even though her writing style can be convoluted and overly verbose at times, eventually the reader will acclimate to her not so accessible prose. This is not a light read. If you want a book to stimulate internal dialogue, however, this is the book to buy.

Dr. Avolio has an international reputation as a researcher and practitioner in leadership. Dr. Avolio has published 10 books and over a 125 articles on leadership and related areas. His books include Transformational and Charismatic Leadership: The Road Ahead (Elsevier Science, 2002), Full Leadership Development: Building the Vital Forces in Organizations (Sage Publications, 1999), and Developing Potential Across a Full Range of Leadership: Cases on Transactional and Transformational Leadership (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2000). A Four-Point Model for Transformational Leadership

The authors of this book provide an easy to implement model of transformational leadership based on four points, which they call the four I's. The focus of their full-range leadership model is a long-term transformational change, as opposed to short-term transactional models. The author's model reflects the importance of leadership and vision in creating organizational "buy-in," driving competitive change, and creating self-sustaining organizations through the growth of like-minded leaders.
I found this book to be well-written and easy to read. The authors apply the model to a wide-range of organizational situations. The only limitation to this book that I found, was a question that I posed to the model, which questions the validity of the model if the culture does nor support the leadership and vision. I suppose though, that the authors would counter argue that if the culture did not support the leadership and vision, that the basis of their model, the four I's were not being implmented properly.

Great instructions and lovely photos

The author of this book, Christina Butcher, has a wonderful website called Hair Romance that I've been following for a couple of years, and so I was really excited to see that she was coming out with a hard copy book. I really like this new book, and know that I will have fun playing with the styles in it!

For most of my adult life, I've had a short pixie cut, but I've spent the last three years growing it out, and it now reaches to my mid-back. I tend to wear it in the same few styles, so I bought this hoping that it would inspire me to get out of my rut. It definitely will!

The book is divided into four main chapters: ponytails; braids; buns, knots, and twists; and chignons. Each section is also color-coded along the edges of the pages, so it's easy to locate the section you're looking for.

On the left-hand side of each page is the name of the style, some colors photos of what the style looks like, the difficulty level, the ideal hair length for achieving the style, the accessories needed, and a few other items. On the right-hand/facing page are step-by-step drawn instructions for doing each style. This layout is really nice, for it makes it very easy to follow along while looking at the photos of the finished style.

One of the other strengths of this book is that it features styles that are very trendy right now, such as topknots, waterfall braids, and fishtail braids. The instructions are also really easy to follow, and most require only a few accessories, like bobby pins or, for some of the buns, a hair donut. I love to watch hair tutorials on You Tube and was worried that it would be hard to follow written instructions (as opposed to following along with videos), but the instructions are really nicely done.

For most of the styles, you will also probably want to have medium to long hair; none of the styles are really for short hair, which makes sense given the types of styles that are in here.

The only negative I was hoping that this book would be designed to do the styles on yourself, but several of them recommend having someone help you until you practice enough to learn how to do the styling yourself.

I had also been worried that this book would be geared more towards younger women, but there are a lot of styles in here that I will feel comfortable, as a forty-two-year-old, wearing to work or out on a date night with the hubby. A few (like putting your hair in bows) are definitely geared towards a younger audience, but most are on-trend and fun.

This is a fun way to try out some new styles and looks! While each style in here might not be to your liking, there's enough variety in here that you will most likely find quite a few styles to try out.

Great photos but disappointed.

I am a follower of the Hair Romance blog so I was super excited there was a hard copy book to purchase with her styles in it. She has multiple ebooks (30 Twist & Pin Hairstyles in 30 Days or Braids or Buns and more she plans to release) she sells on her website, I'm tempted to buy them but at $15 each, I'd still need to print up in color the 75+ pages as I like to have a hardcopy in front of me so I don't have to go back and forth to the computer to try to do a style. From her website she states that this book is NOT a copy of those eBooks but new styles so it was a steal at the $15 book price already printed. However, the format of the book definitely doesn't WOW like her blog does. Don't get me wrong, there are some amazing and beautiful hairstyles in here, actually a LOT of styles. The photos on the left show some variations of the same style and a write up on the difficulty level, ideal hair length, whether hair extensions are needed, whether assistance is needed, a blurb on accessories and a "Try This" write up on variations referring you to other pages and ideas. Take note though, the font is SMALL, like if you were farsided, you would definitely need your reading glasses. For that side, of the book and how many styles there are, this is a really good book, BUT the right page is a different story. The right page is the "How To Get It" page, obviously the important page. It tells you what you need (brush, hair elastic, bobby pins etc.), the bottom tells you a write up on how to get the style which in some cases isn't 100% clear but the disappointment comes in the step by step pictures. They aren't pictures at all but drawings. Why oh why would she not use the same format as her blog and use the beautiful photos like her tutorials there?? I know she was trying to fit a LOT of styles and information in the book, but sometimes there aren't enough pictures, AHEM, drawings. For example, the twist-over ponytail tells you to clip away medium sections of hair on the side of your face and secure the rest with a ponytail holder (I'm paraphrasing here) and the first drawing shows someone putting a rubberband on hair. Well it would be nice to know how far forward or back a "medium-sized section" is by a visual with a PHOTO. OK, I'm beating a dead horse here. I do like this book and the variety it offers. Plus if you are a fan of the hair blog community, you will see some familiar faces, photos and styles, I just wish it had PHOTOS, not drawings.

A great how-to guide to seemingly simply styles for long hair!

I originally saw this book in December at a high-end stationer and thought it would make a cute stocking-stuffer for the ladies in my family. The book is divided into chapters: buns, ponytails, braids and up-dos. Each page offers a different style of braid, ponytail, bun, etc. complete with pictures, illustrations and text. Some of the styles are elaborate but due to space on the page, the styles suffer from an accurate amount of directions to complete the style quickly. The tutorials are great at mentioning what styling product works best with each type of hair and the buyer should note that specific tools are used to make certain hair styles: a topsytail tool, bun or "donut", specific bobby pins, hair ties, etc. so the buyer may want to consider grabbing a few of these items at a beauty supply store to make this gift the complete package. The book is a paperback book with a durable, hardcover and measures approximately 9" x 7" with close to 200 pages. Please note: I saw this book for $19.95 at a stationary shop and was able to purchase it on Amazon.com for about $12.00 the week before Christmas (with free, Prime shipping). It certainly pays to do your comparison research!

An essential reference for scholars of religion

J. Gordon Melton's "Encyclopedia of American Religions" is a reference work to which I turn, year after year, in my work as both a scholar and journalist. And I eagerly look forward to each new edition (I viewed the 6th edition as I prepared this review).
This mammoth work contains both a series of essays on major religious traditions and a series of profiles of individual denominations, fellowships, and missions. The profiles on individual religious bodies number well over 2,300 in the 6th edition. Mailing addresses and bibliographic references (when available) for each individual body further add to the book's usefulness.
Melton covers everything from the largest mainstream denominations to the smallest and most esoteric bodies. His broad editorial vision takes in nearly every conceivable religious tradition: Christianity in all its permutations (Anglican, Lutheran, Pentecostal, etc.), Judaism, Hinduism and other Eastern traditions, Neo-Pagan groups, "flying saucer"-related fellowships, Atheist and Humanist associations, and more. Each entry is written in an objective manner.
The latest edition of this book should be in every library in Canada and the United States. Furthermore, serious journalists and scholars of religion will find this to be a useful and fascinating edition to their own private libraries.

Must for any library -

While I don't own it (yet) I've been impressed with it since first learning of it. While this is not a work on which most households would spend hundreds of dollars, there really is no substitute for Melton's masterpiece. Even defunct and/or oddball sects are included, such as Kennedy worshippers, the House of David, and schismatic versions of many faiths. The organization of this work is by theological classification (Holiness movement or Black Muslim for two examples), but the index is comprehensive.

About the Author
Marcus G. Raskin is co-founder of the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. Considered by many to be one of the foremost contemporary political theorists, he is the author of many books, including The Common Good, Being and Doing, Notes on the Old System, and Politics of National Security. Herbert J. Bernstein is profesor of physics at Hampshire College and visiting scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a trustee of the Association of Members of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and a W.K. Kellogg National Fellow.
