An Amazon Best Book of January 2016: The Road to Little Dribbling comes twenty years after Bill Bryson’s Notes from a Small Island, in which he first described his love affair with his adopted Great Britain. That first book was laugh-out-loud funny, and so is this one. It opens with Bryson describing (hilariously) the perils of growing older, eventually revealing the author’s successful passing of the Life in Britain Knowledge Test (thus, making him a British citizen). The rest of the book follows that pattern: Bryson describes getting older, and he describes Great Britain via a trip he took across the 700 mile long island. While he tried to avoid places he visited in Notes from a Small Island—he does revisit Dover—those who read the first book will enjoy a welcome sense of the familiar—even if Bryson appears to have grown a little more cynical and angry with age. But give the guy a break: the world is changing, even his beloved “cozy and embraceable” island. And as he writes in the book, “I recently realized with dismay that I am even too old for early onset dementia. Any dementia I get will be right on time.” --Chris Schluep

I am so sad to say that after loving almost everything Bill Bryson has put out this book is just no fun - it's the ramblings of a cranky old man. I put it down after about 100 pages. Life's too short to read books you are not enjoying.

It is good Bryson, but not his best

It is good Bryson, but not his best. Perhaps my reservation is that I don't live in the UK and therefore couldn't relate to some of the locations. Sections of the book were too repetitious and he seemed to revert to the fart jokes for shock value too often.

Not what he was.

Bill Bryson may have written one too many books and this is it. The engaging candour which flowed from the missteps of a modest everyman has deteriorated to the self-satisfaction and self-consciousness of a hugely popular writer now struggling to fill the page as he meanders through Britain. Still very readable the freshness has gone and it is a pedestrian piece filled with familiar Bryson mannerisms. I got the feeling that this was written to meet a contractual obligation. For the first time in his many books I found myself disliking the author's persona.

This is the correct way to make personnel decisions for your firm. Mathematical methodology. Too often we only go by gut feel when we hire and fire people. Think strategically instead. Using this approach should lead to a more productive workforce. Innovative thought provoking cases and examples like "The Risky Hire"-which is a totally out of the box approach to hiring.

The most helpful and engaging textbook I have ever read. Actually, it was probably the only textbook that I have read cover to cover. I almost feel bad in this review calling it a textbook, because it reads so smoothly, and provides so many specific examples and stories to draw in the reader.

This book provides a strategic framework for entrepreneurs, managers, and hr business partners to make decisions with an understanding of trade-offs. How should you organize your firm? What are the advantages and disadvantages to a centralized/decentralized company? How should you design performance management and compensation systems? This book gives us the tools to make more informed and logical decisions.

In my mind this book should be read by anyone who is interested business. This book is a valuable resource that keeps giving.

Wasn't exactly "fun" to buy, but it was at a great price and came very quickly! I usually don't like textbooks but this one is more conversational than most and the chapters aren't horribly long so it's not a bad read. Good buy!

It was clearly written and is very current for enhancement pack 6.0. Sometimes it is difficult to get clear and specific information in SAP and these short one subject books can be the best way to get detailed knowledge. I have found some better than others. I feel this is one of the better ones and well worth the money to either learn about or to refresh or become current on this subject.

Great tutorial on hard-to-find subjects

The format and contents of this book provide me the in-depth knowledge about how SAP handles to EBS and Lockbox operations.
The language is such business-oriented and the illustrations are self-explanatory to compliment beautifully the subjects in-discussed.
I'm impressed with the knowledge of the authors on these topics and would recommend it to others.
Pros: . Format is concise and focused
. The subjects in-discussed (EBS and Lockbox) is hard-to-find
. the explanation is directed to both SAP business users as well as technical professionals

The Princess Bride is a true fantasy classic. William Goldman describes it as a "good parts version" of "S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure." Morgenstern's original was filled with details of Florinese history, court etiquette, and Mrs. Morgenstern's mostly complimentary views of the text. Much admired by academics, the "Classic Tale" nonetheless obscured what Mr. Goldman feels is a story that has everything: "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Believe it or not, my future husband used this book to win my hand. I think giving it to me as a gift was his way of proving that he is a hopeless romantic, since the book is so wonderfully hopelessly romantic. So far, he's lived up to it! If you've only seen the movie, but love it, then you should definitely read the book. Also look for the 25th Anniversary (yes, it's really been that long) edition this Christmas--it includes the first chapter of the forthcoming sequel, Buttercup's Baby.

S. Morgenstern's classic tale of true love and high adventure. :)

Best bits: Quality writing. In it's own league, both in style and format, and it's so great. Story within story within story: telling his current experiences, plus reflections on when his father read him the story when he was 10, plus the tale itself (which you probably know by heart). There's a lot going on, but it works.

Issues: I've never understood what Westley sees in Buttercup that provokes his undying love, but to each his own. In Goldman's personal narrative bits, he's rather harsh about his wife and son, and broadly hints that he wouldn't mind pursuing another woman while married. The story itself is a bit down on women in general, but there's no sex, just a lot of violence: bloody sword fights, deadly wrestling matches, torture, encounters with dangerous animals, etc. Inigo's quest for vengeance is famous, but still leaves me a bit uncomfortable.

One of my favorite books in the world

One of my favorite books in the world. As much as I love the movie, it's about a fifth, or even a tenth as good as this. You know in the beginning of the movie, where the boy is skeptical that he's gonna enjoy this book, and the grandfather goes, "Are you kidding? Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Revenge. Giants. Monsters. Chases. Escapes. True love. Miracles." (I looked up the quote--I'm not THAT much of a nerd that I knew it exactly off the top of my head. But maybe somewhere close on the nerd scale...) It's that, but much more so, plus HILARIOUS humor throughout the whole thing. Would definitely reccommend it!

I Can See Why This Was Made Into A Movie

Looking back on this book, it has something for everyone. Action for those bored of constant talking, quiet scenes for those who want to get to know the characters, romance for those who want to fall in love or want to do so again, dark villains that the heroes have an axe to grind against. Not to mention some good mythology regarding the Dred Pirate Roberts. There's no grandfather reading this story to his grandson though. That was a movie invention. Hope that won't put you off of picking up this book though.
