About the Author
Steven R. Gordon is an Associate Professor of Information Systems and Technology at Babson College. He is a co-author of Information Systems: A Management Approach and Essentials of Accounting Information Systems. Dr. Gordon's research and consulting interests focus on two areas: governance and structure of the information technology function in organizations and e-commerce in the financial service industry. His research appears in the Communications of the ACM, Information & Management, Information syst4ems Management, the International Journal of Service Industry Management, other academic journals. He is a Global Associate Editor of the Journal of Information Technology Cases and Applications and serves on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of End User Computing.

Before arriving at Babson College, Dr. Gordon founded and served as President of Beta Principles, Inc.,which developed and marketed accounting software and resold computer hardware. Dr.. Gordon also consulted to the airline industry at Simat, Helliesen & Eichner, Inc. He holds a Ph.D. in Transportation Systems from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Judith R. Gordon Is an Associate Professor of Management in the Carroll School of Management at Boston College and has twice served as chairperson of the department. Dr. Gordon's research and publication interests focus on the career development of women, work-family issues in the workplace, organization change, information systems delivery, and managerial effectiveness. She has regularly presented papers at the Academy of Management meetings and has published articles in such journals as the Academy of Management Executive, Women in Management Review, Human Resource Planning, Information Systems Management, Information & Management, Sloan Management Review, and Academy of Management Review. She is the author of Organizational Behavior: A Diagnostic Approach, Information Systems: A Management Approach and Human Resources Management: A Practical Approach.

Dr. Gordon was the first woman to receive a doctorate from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is Currently a member of the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

About the Author
Nanette B. Sayles, Ed.D., RHIA, CCS, CHPS, CPHIMS, FAHIMA, is a 1985 graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health Information Management Program (formerly Medical Record Administration Program). She went on to earn master of science in health information management and master of public administration degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, as well as a doctorate in adult education from the University of Georgia. An associate professor in the Health Information Management Program at East Central College in Union, Missouri, Sayles previously served as program director and assistant professor for the Health Information Management and Technology Programs at Macon State College in Macon, Georgia. She has extensive HIM experience in hospitals, consulting, system development and implementation, and education and is the recipient of the 2005 AHIMA Triumph Educator award.

Strategies of Competition Based on the Writings of Sun Tzu

One of the growing methodologies of business books is to take the writings of some long-ago sage, and to apply the wisdom shown to modern conditions. This is one of the more useful examples of such a book.

Sun Tzu, a Chinese general of 2500 years ago, was able to unify China by skillful use of limited power. The author takes the writings themselves, and then applied the ideas of modern business thinkers (Tom Peters, Peter Drucker, Warren Bennis, and others) and military strategists (Helmuth von Moltke, George S. Patton, J.F.C. Fuller) to them. The result is an interesting mixture of a translated Sun Tzu with provocative aphorisms and analysis.

Aimed at business readers, this book is also valuable in wider contexts such as volunteer organizations, non-profits, sports, government, competitive activities of all kinds--and of course modern day military ventures. No one has unlimited resources to pursue all desirable objectives, and the advice of this book, while unlikely to be startingly new to most readers, is fresh and well stated. The basic analogy here is between war as practiced by Sun Tzu and every day competive activities for rewards large and small, individual, organizational, and societal.

"Sun Tzu's central idea is that battles or competition are won by the organization or person who, first, has the greatest competitive advantage and who, second, makes the fewest mistakes. Competitive advantage can be provided by many factors including superior manpower, superior position, superior execution, and innovation....But competitive advantage is not the determining factor in success. It is people who fight and win battles. And the most important person in the battle is the general.

"According to Sun Tzu, the ideal general wins the war before the fighting begins. He does this in two ways: first, he develops his character over time; second, he creates a critical strategic advantage....A general gains a critical strategic advantage by placing his organization in a position where it cannot be defeated and waiting for the enemy to give him an opportunity to win....

"Sun Tzu's army is modeled on what can be termed a "natural organization" model. Natural organizations have three characteristics. First, they exist to serve a defined purpose....Second, they are information centered....They avoid unwarranted opinion and conjecture, choosing to deal with uncertainty by estimating reasonable probabilities. Third, natural organizations are completely flexible and totally adaptable. They respond quickly and effectively to changes in their environment that affect their ability to serve their defined purpose."

The author defines Sun Tzu's principles in modern jargon as (1) Learn to fight; (2) show the way; (3) do it right; (4) know the facts; (5) expect the worst; (6) sieze the day; (7) burn the bridges; (8) do it better;
(9) pull together; (10) keep them guessing.

"Competition should occur when we have something important to gain or when we are in danger. In competitive situations, we should not allow our emotions to govern our actions....Sun Tzu also mentions five character flaws that can lead to failure. These are recklessness, timidity, emotionalism, egoism, and overconcern for popularity....

"Sun Tzu states that competitive advantage arises from creating favorable opportunities and then acting on these opportunities at the appropriate time. In other words, winners do the right thing at the right moment.

"But Sun Tzu also reminds us to govern the desire to act with the need for patience. He teaches us that we can be held responsible for putting ourselves in a position where we cannot be defeated, but others must create the opportunity to win. Hence, we must be willing to wait. Just because we know how to win does not mean that we can win. Move when it is profitable and stop when it is not...

"Sun Tzu says that in war there are only two types of tactics: expected and unexpected. Effective commanders combine expected and unexpected tactics according to the requirements of the situation. But it is unexpected tactics that create the opportunity for victory. Unexpected, or innovative, tactics cannot be defended against in advance. Innovation is the one weapon that makes you invincible. The power of innovation makes victory certain."

The author has created a very wise and very thought-provoking book. Those who read it and ponder its deeper meaning will greatly benefit from it.

The book is too simplistic and lacks the spirit of an ancient general, there are no real world examples in this book. My recommendation is to read "Sun Tze The Art of Business"

The foundation of good business thought

This book has earned my highest offer, I often cart it around my house and I always know where it is. It serves me as being a "Owner's Manual" for every aspect of business. The author does an excellent job in applying the words of an ancient warrior to today's business operations. I have never found any other book that simply spells out success in competition like this does. This book has become the basis of the way that I think about my business transactions. Don't let the name fool you, one of the primary points of this book is if a battle is fought and won correctly, you will never have to shed any blood on the battle field. It teaches you that skill, not size, is the most important factor in doing business

A great read--and you get to know "Ramses" Emerson!

The Mummy Case is the third in the series of Amelia Peabody mysteries, which are set in turn-of-the-century Egypt and England. Amelia is a staunch believer in the superiority of all things British, and her husband is an archaeologist with a mission (namely to save the antiquities of Egypt from the clutches of untrained archaeologists and unscrupulous antiquities dealers). All of the Peabody mysteries are tongue-in-cheek tributes to the mystery genre in general and English female detectives in particular.
The Mummy Case is the most enjoyable of the first three mysteries, in large part because we get to know the Emersons's four-year old enfant terrible--Walter Peabody Emerson, nicknamed "Ramses." Ramses already knows Coptic, Arabic, German, French, and the modern methods of archaeology. While his parents stumble about trying to find out how the death of a Cairo antiquities dealer is related to the mummy case of a German baroness and a village torn between an evangelical American missionary and the ancient Coptic church, Ramses quietly goes about solving the puzzle before either one of them.
Ramses is a fantastic addition to the Emerson family, and only increases the reader's enjoyment. The mysteries are not the main thing in these books; the development of highly individualistic characters is.

The Mummy Case by Elizabeth Peters

This remains one of the funniest books I've ever read. It's probably my favorite Amelia Peabody (Next to Lion in the Valley}
Oh how I wish Peters hadn't let Amelia's son Ramses grow up so quickly. In later books, his character(while interesting) has evolved into the standardized tall, dark and handsome leading man beloved of all historical mystery writers. But oh, what a fiendishly (not to mention, hysterically funny) atrocious little boy he is in these early books. I love his lisp! I love the way Peters sets his longwinded conversations with the lisp in tact. If you read them aloud, they're even funnier. What a deranged little genius. And speaking of deranged, what about his father, the most famous archeologist of his or any other time, Radcliffe Emerson? I love Amelia, I really do, but one of the main reasons I read and reread these books, is the inspired lunacy of her husband. Whenever I'm depressed, I pick up The Mummy Case or one of the other early Peabodys and I'm sent back to turn of the century Egypt and the intrepid Amelia and her zany family. DON'T
read these for the mysteries, although there certainly is one in every book, instead read these for the ingenious characters and the inspired lunacy of plot. This is satire in its best form. Fun. Fun. Fun.
I'm wondering if Elizabeth Peters now regrets setting these books in 'real' time. I believe she should've held on to the earlier years of the Emersons a bit longer. I'm also wondering why this wonderful series hasn't been snapped up by Hollywood.
If I could, I'd option them myself.

The men in Amelia's life

are giving her fits! First there is her handsome, brilliant husband, Radcliffe Emerson, the emminent Egyptologist who finds himself once again being dragged away from his work by Amelia's escapades. Then the mysterious Master Criminal again wrecks havoc in the lives of the Emersons and their friends. The most exasperating 'man' in Amelia's life, however, turns out to be her precocious son 'Ramses'. By the time most children are struggling with their ABCs Ramses can both speak and read several languages including Arabic and was well versed in the family vocation of Eqyptology.

The Emersons set out for another season digging for ancient Eqyptian artifacts but soon find themselves swept up by a series of more modern mysteries and adventures.

The most charming aspects of this series are the hilarious Emerson family. Amelia and her tendancy to overestimate her abilities, and Emerson and his tendancy to underestimate them, are both confounded by their son's talents to keep them both struggling to keep up.

Ramses has a speech impediment (affectation?) that the author uses, I believe, to remind the reader that he is very young. The first few times it appears this device is rather cute but it does begin to wear thin after a time. He does outgrow it later in the series so bear with it for now. His precociousness brings a smile to anyone who can recall putting one over on an adult and bit of chagrin to any parent who has had a child put one over on them.

I love this series, particularly watching the characters grow and change with the times. The mysteries are intriguing, the action exciting and the comedy is delightful.

A charming book for Moon lovers

As long as I can remember, the moon has enchanted me.

That slivery splendour shining down at me, I have always wondered what is it made of. How was it formed? What does it look like up close? How big is it? How far is it?

Through the years, those questions have been answered, but that did not mean the moon still did not intrigue me. I have collected books on the subject of the Sky. However, thinking I had every book on the subject I was excited to come across this little gem.

This book is a charming collection of facts, poems of everything you ever wanted to know about the moon.

The Moon Watcher's companion has a comprehensive encyclopaedia of lunar terminology. A timeline of lunar explorations and three sections that detail the moon's faces, phases, and known facts.

This book has put together a wonderful blend of myth, folklore, poems. It is beautifully anchored by l interesting lunar science.

This book is necessary in any Pagan/Wiccan's library or anyone who wants a little knowledge of that splendour in the sky.

And, the illustrations make this a must see item for kids too.

Mistitled, borderline false advertising.

The description says "everything you ever wanted to know about the moon." That only holds true if everything you ever wanted to know, was how the moon has been worshipped by various cultures, and how to worship it. Very little useful scientific information. Browsing from my phone, which makes it hard to read about a product, I didn't realize until it was too late, what kind of book this is. The book should be titled "Moon Worshiper's Companion." The current title implies that it is a useful companion for those looking at the moon. There are plenty of wiccans, spiritualists, and hippies out there, no need to dance around what this book truly is. Make it obvious in the title and the description.

I will say it is well written and has nice illustrations, but useless to me.

This introductory course in ordinary differential equations, intended for junior undergraduate students in applied mathematics, science and engineering, focuses on methods of solution and applications rather than theoretical analyses. Applications drawn mainly from dynamics, population biology and electric circuit theory are used to show how ordinary differential equations appear in the formulation of problems in science and engineering. The calculus required to comprehend this course is rather elementary, involving differentiation, integration and power series representation of only real functions of one variable. A basic knowledge of complex numbers and their arithmetic is also assumed, so that elementary complex functions which can be used for working out easily the general solutions of certain ordinary differential equations can be introduced. The pre-requisites just mentioned aside, the course is mainly self-contained. To promote the use of this course for self-study, suggested solutions are not only given to all set exercises, but they are also by and large complete with details.
