Vital guide to an amazing and brilliant camera
By Geoff Dolman
Both the Nikon Coolpix P900 and this book are kinda hard to review and rate. The camera is so complex, and Nikon has decided not to include a paper manual in a $600 camera that is now selling at MSRP, which I think is really shoddy -- there is plenty of room in the large box, and the idea of using a downloaded pdf that is massive is preposterous. How you gonna lug a computer around with your camera stuff? Well, all the information about this massively flexible camera is included in Mr. White's book. Particularly in the beginning, I found it hard to follow. For some reason, he begins with short discussions of the camera as it comes out of the box with enough settings to go out the door and shoot. But he does not really explore the entire setup menu until something like chapter 7. I would have moved it up much closer to the beginning. His chapters on the menus and features, once he got going, were really comprehensive and well-covered. There is really not any other choice at this point, so if you are looking for a comprehensive manual that covers the mammoth features and the few questionable decisions Nikon made (no raw files, apparent restriction on panoramas to only wide angle, for example). So while not the best organized camera book I have read and not the easiest to follow, this really does cover everything and earns the five stars, I think.
Addition 10/15: Many of the features and settings do not explain why Mr. White makes the suggested choices. Occasionally he does explain why, but, for the most part, this information is missing. This is in contrast to David Busch's books that always explain why he recommends his settings. Otherwise, this is a great book and essential for shooters who want to be able to make use of the amazing features of this amazing camera.

Great book for using a great camera!
By W. E. Matthews, III
I cannot say enough good about is book! I picked up one of the first P900's to hit Houston, TX right after the release date and have been having a blast learning how to use the camera to its best advantage. I had been reading the Nikon manual since before the launch and read it again after getting the camera. The Nikon manual is very helpful in understanding how to change settings, etc., but this book explains what the settings mean and the implications of using them. White gives useful examples with accompanying example pics. When you read the book, read the 200+ page Nikon manual along with it. If you buy a P900, be sure to buy this book!

but I found that the book explains many things better and in plain language
By Chris Hess
Although the book states that it's not a replacement for the official Nikon Coolpix P900 manual, but I found that the book explains many things better and in plain language. So, I found myself using this book more often than the official manual due to the ease of its use.

The UHMWPE Handbook: Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene in Total Joint Replacement, by Steven M. Kurtz Ph.D.

This book describes the history and properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) used in artificial joints.

UHMWPE is currently used in 1.4 million patients around the world every year for use in the hip, knee, upper extremities and spine. It has been used in hip replacements for over 40 years. Although the use of this material is very succcessful, the lifetime of artificial joints is limited to approximately 10 years, after which the survivorship declines markedly.

Recently, the orthopedic industry has developed new processing techniques (radiation crosslinking), which are expected to dramatically reduce wear and improve the longevity of hip implants beyond 10 years.

A major emphasis of this book is to describe the properties of these new highly crosslinked UHMWPE materials and to review the latest clinical results.

* The most up-to-date information on the properties of UHMWPE

* Endorsed by Ticona - the world's leading manufacturer of UHMWPE for medical use

* An enormous 'installed base' of over 1.4 million procedures each year

* UHMWPE has been used by orthopedists for over 40 years, yet its properties and performance in situ are still not well understood

Great resource.
By Mr D'arcy
This is a great sourcebook about the history, variety and current use of polyethylene in total joint replacements. It is well researched, written and presented. It covers joints other than hips and knees and includes a good historical overview, including metal-on-metal and other lesser used polymers.

This atlas is a comprehensive guide to the treatment and correction of scars. It is divided into four sections covering the different types of scar: atrophic and stretch marks, keloid and hypertrophic, normotrophic, and mixed. For each scar type, the various invasive and minimally invasive procedures and their results are documented with the aid of numerous high-quality photographs. In the section on keloid and hypertrophic scars, treatment is presented according to scar localization. In addition, the influence of etiology on treatment is considered, with distinction between scars due to injuries, animal bites, inflammatory diseases (including acne and varicella), and burns. Review
"Want a challenge? Most people are familiar with folded paper origami cranes or napkin swans. Some paper folders have graduated to folding elephants, crabs or geometric shapes. Then there are true papercraft artists whose creations are above and beyond a hobbyist's skill. In this case, you have Yee. Origami Architecture is for anyone who aspires to be the type of artist who is meticulous, exacting and fascinated by complexity." —McClatchy Newspapers

"What's notable about these paper replicas is how much detail that plain white paper can illuminate. When you strip away the model's materiality, the simple interface of light and shade highlights the striking beauty of the buildings' architectural outlines. That such intricate crafts can be folded flat only adds to their mystery." —Architect magazine

OH MY GOD!
By Ray
This book is absolutely beyond amazing!

You can see not only how much efforts did the author contribute to every single page but also the exceptional details presented in each page.

I am in fact very surprised that this book only cost 15 dollars, I would willing to pay for this wonderful book for even 50 dollars.

It does worth that much, or even beyond! If you love paper craft, this book is a must-have, even perfect for thanksgiving present or a X'mas gift!!

Great book for lovers of paper art.
By perennialgardener
This book will give you either hours of fun or hours of headaches, hopefully both. These are kind of slice-form models of famous buildings, that collapse. Extremely detailed models, plus so much detail about their construction that it is nearly overwhelming.

WARNING - This book comes with a computer CD that contains all the patterns. If you buy it used, make SURE that the CD is still there or it will be just a coffee table book of nice pictures.

This author is a paper fanatic, and a treasure to the art world. If you like paper art, or would like to try it, get this book, an Exacto knife and a huge supply of #11 & #17 blades (great deals on Amazon!)and get busy.

I decided to do the hardest model in the book, (they are arranged in order of difficulty), and it is going to take me a couple years to finish in my spare time. There are thousands of very tiny intricate cuts to make, specially on the windows.

TIP - get the #17 Exacto blades to make the windows on the last model, and possible others as well. You can just punch them out instead of cutting with a pointed blade. Saves hours! If you are in paper art, you will know what I mean.

Not for the novice
By Charles L. Clark II
I bought the book because I immediately saw myself spending hours building these models when I saw the cover. What fun I thought! What a novice I am is what I actually discovered. While the CD has ALL of the templates and the book has GREAT designs and photos NOWHERE are there tips on how to cut, fold or punch any of the designs. This disappointed me greatly. For Yee to be such a paper advocate I would have thought that at least the CD would have videos, photos or even links to other resources for any of the techniques he describes. This is not a book for someone who thinks they can sit down and build one in afternoon but if you want to build some skill with paper - this could be the inspirational book for you.

Martin Van Buren: The American Presidents Series: The 8th President, 1837-1841, by Ted Widmer

The first president born after America's independence ushers in a new era of no-holds-barred democracy

The first "professional politician" to become president, the slick and dandyish Martin Van Buren was to all appearances the opposite of his predecessor, the rugged general and Democratic champion Andrew Jackson. Van Buren, a native Dutch speaker, was America's first ethnic president as well as the first New Yorker to hold the office, at a time when Manhattan was bursting with new arrivals. A sharp and adroit political operator, he established himself as a powerhouse in New York, becoming a U.S. senator, secretary of state, and vice president under Jackson, whose election he managed. His ascendancy to the Oval Office was virtually a foregone conclusion.

Once he had the reins of power, however, Van Buren found the road quite a bit rougher. His attempts to find a middle ground on the most pressing issues of his day-such as the growing regional conflict over slavery-eroded his effectiveness. But it was his inability to prevent the great banking panic of 1837, and the ensuing depression, that all but ensured his fall from grace and made him the third president to be denied a second term. His many years of outfoxing his opponents finally caught up with him.

Ted Widmer, a veteran of the Clinton White House, vividly brings to life the chaos and contention that plagued Van Buren's presidency-and ultimately offered an early lesson in the power of democracy.

From Publishers Weekly
In the latest volume of Arthur Schlesinger's American Presidents series, Widmer (Young America) paints a brief but elegant portrait of our eighth president, who, Widmer says, created the modern political party system, for which he deserves our "grudging respect." Andrew Jackson's successor, Martin Van Buren (1782–1862) was also at various times Jackson's secretary of state, ambassador to the Court of St. James's and vice president. As Widmer relates, some newspapermen called the New York Democrat "the little magician" because of his diminutive frame and his deftness at political sleight of hand. Others—who criticized his response when the American economy ground to a halt shortly after his election in 1836—called him "Martin Van Ruin." Despite the collapse of financial markets in 1837, Van Buren held fast to his belief in the Jacksonian principles of limited federal government, states' rights and protection of the "people" from the "powerful." This led him to reject calls for a national bank and an independent treasury. Throughout his term, Van Buren effectively took no federal action to alleviate the economic crisis. Thus it was not surprising when, despite building the Democratic Party into a well-oiled machine, he went down to defeat after just one term, beaten by William Henry Harrison, the Virginian Whig of aristocratic background who posed as a simple rustic. All this Widmer relates powerfully, engagingly and efficiently.

From Booklist
Clinton administration speechwriter Widmer sparks his assessment of the eighth president with the contemporary allusions, color, and humor of a good speech. Van Buren had a tough, undistinguished single term (1837-41). The first great U.S. depression hit days after he succeeded his mentor, Andrew Jackson, and he declined to deal with slavery, which became an elephant-in-the-bedroom issue during his administration. His finest achievements preceded and followed his presidency. After John Quincy Adams' 1824 selection as president by the House of Representatives despite Jackson's winning a plurality of the vote, Van Buren, a consummate schmoozer and deal maker, built the Democratic Party, mollifying the slave-holding South to do so. In 1848, however, he led the antislavery Free Soil ticket, at the risk of destroying the party he had created. Further endearing him, Van Buren was the first rags-to-riches president and the first (of two; the other is Kennedy) lacking Anglo-Saxon forebears. Contra Widmer, however, he didn't enjoy the third-longest postpresidency, after Hoover and Carter, but the fifth, after Adams I and Ford, as well. Ray Olson

A good overview of a troubled presidency.
By Daniel J. dundon
If you are looking for the definitive biography on Martin Van Buren, this is probably not the book to read. However, if you want to know something about this relatively obscure president who became president at the worst possible time and don't want to invest a great deal of time, this is your book. Ted Widmer has done an outstanding job in his series of giving you the high points and low points of the presidents he profiles. Think of it as the Cliff Notes for presidents. It is well researched but lacks some of the anecdotes most readers are accustomed to when reading presidential biographies.

Probably Not: Future Prediction Using Probability and Statistical Inference, by Lawrence N. Dworsky

An engaging, entertaining, and informative introduction to probability and prediction in our everyday lives

Although Probably Not deals with probability and statistics, it is not heavily mathematical and is not filled with complex derivations, proofs, and theoretical problem sets. This book unveils the world of statistics through questions such as what is known based upon the information at hand and what can be expected to happen. While learning essential concepts including "the confidence factor" and "random walks," readers will be entertained and intrigued as they move from chapter to chapter. Moreover, the author provides a foundation of basic principles to guide decision making in almost all facets of life including playing games, developing winning business strategies, and managing personal finances.

Much of the book is organized around easy-to-follow examples that address common, everyday issues such as:

  • How travel time is affected by congestion, driving speed, and traffic lights

  • Why different gambling casino strategies ultimately offer players no advantage

  • How to estimate how many different birds of one species are seen on a walk through the woods

Seemingly random events—coin flip games, the Central Limit Theorem, binomial distributions and Poisson distributions, Parrando's Paradox, and Benford's Law—are addressed and treated through key concepts and methods in probability. In addition, fun-to-solve problems including "the shared birthday" and "the prize behind door number one, two, or three" are found throughout the book, which allow readers to test and practice their new probability skills. Requiring little background knowledge of mathematics, readers will gain a greater understanding of the many daily activities and events that involve random processes and statistics.

Review
"The book is a very good tool for students and specialists in different areas who do not like advanced statistics, but are obliged to understand, a least partly, the process of decision making." (International Statistical Review, December 2008)

"The fact that Dworsky uses examples from many fields, and discusses topics not usually covered in beginning course, may also increase student interest in pursuing statistics at a more advanced level." (MAA Reviews, July 2008)

From the Back Cover

Combining the mathematics of probability with real-world examples, Probably Not is an ideal reference for practitioners and students who would like to learn more about the role of probability and statistics in everyday decision making.

Probability discussed with light mathematics
By David J. Aldous
Written in what I call the "textbook lite" style, intermediate between college texts teaching one to do math probability calculations in systematic detail, and the "popular science" style with words but no math. The contents might be put into 4 categories.

(1) Initial chapters give clear and unhurried explanations (illustrated by graphs and tables) of the basic math surrounding probability distributions, averages and standard deviations, and how the Normal distribution arises in dice-throwing or random walk.

(2) Scattered throughout the book are the classics of elementary math probability: the Binomial and Poisson distributions; conditional probability; Bayes rule illustrated by medical diagnosis; the birthday problem; Monte Hall; Benford's law and Simpson's paradox; gamblers ruin; analysis of games such as double-up-when-you-lose, and the Deal-or-no-Deal TV show.

(3) "Popular science" topics such as social networks, stock markets, statistical mechanics, deterministic chaos.

The preceding material is presented in a clear and readable way, though not markedly distinct from many previous books of varying styles, for instance (in the same "textbook lite" style) Probabilities: The Little Numbers That Rule Our Lives or Chance: The Life of Games & the Game of Life. The only part that struck me as somewhat distinctive was a fourth category, starting with a discussion of random number generators, and proceding to descriptions of and analysis of simple stochastic models for several phenomena, such as: driving through a series of traffic signals, waiting in a doctor's office, observing some birds flying in a forest and trying to estimate the total number of birds.

Overall: well-written, worth reading if you haven't seen such material before, but no particular individual vision and so not a notable addition to existing literature. Like most existing books it is content to repeat theory without critical examination of real-world applicability or significance. The subtitle is misleading -- it's not specifically about future prediction. And at $64 for a 300-page paperback it is considerably more expensive than many alternative books I have reviewed, such as Chance: The Life of Games & the Game of Life or Chance Rules: An Informal Guide to Probability, Risk and Statistics.

He has been perhaps the most influential man in the area of personal success technique development, primarily through his classic book Think and Grow Rich which has helped million of the people and has been important in the life of many successful people such as W. Clement Stone and Og Mandino. Napoleon Hill was born into poverty in 1883 in a one-room cabin on the Pound River in Wise County, Virginia. At the age of 10 his mother died, and two years later his father remarried. He became a very rebellious boy, but grew up to be an incredible man. He began his writing career at age 13 as a mountain reporter for small town newspapers and went on to become America's most beloved motivational author. Fighting against all class of great disadvantages and pressures, he dedicated more than 25 years of his life to define the reasons by which so many people fail to achieve true financial success and happiness in their life. During this time he achieved great success as an attorney and journalist. His early career as a reporter helped finance his way through law school. He was given an assignment to write a series of success stories of famous men, and his big break came when he was asked to interview steel-magnate Andrew Carnegie. Mr. Carnegie commissioned Hill to interview over 500 millionaires to find a success formula that could be used by the average person. These included Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, Elmer Gates, Charles M. Schwab, Theodore Roosevelt, William Wrigley Jr, John Wanamaker, WIlliam Jennings Bryan, George Eastman, Woodrow Wilson, William H. Taft, John D. Rockefeller, F. W. Woolworth, Jennings Randolph, among others. He became an advisor to Andrew Carnegie, and with Carnegie's help he formulated a philosophy of success, drawing on the thoughts and experience of a multitude of rags-to-riches tycoons. It took Hill over 20 years to produce his book, a classic in the Personal Development field called Think and Grow Rich. Let's Get Successful!
By David Anderson
In defense of a particular audio rendition of this work, I'll make a few points about what we commonly refer to as The Law of Success by Napoleon Hill.

Since few reviews list them, the 17 principles of success according to Dr. Hill are as follows:

1) The Master Mind - Learn the psychology behind success and how you can use it to enhance your personal power.

2) A Definite Chief Aim - Save wasted effort, and focus your heart and mind on a well-conceived, practical purpose.

3) Self-Confidence - Overcome the six basic fears and empower yourself without falling into the trap of egotism.

4) The Habit of Saving - Master this basic concept and learn to harness your greatest source of personal power.

5) Initiative and Leadership - Develop your instincts to anticipate problems and know when to seize opportunities.

6) Imagination - Stimulate your mind to create new concepts out of common ideas and put them to work for you.

7) Enthusiasm - Overcome uncertainty or shyness, and inspire others to take an interest in you and your ideas.

8) Self-Control - Find the firmness of character to truly be "master of your fate and the captain of your soul."

9) The Habit of Doing More Than Paid For - Take advantage of the Law of Increasing Returns to earn more for service rendered.

10) Pleasing Personality - Transform yourself so that you can master your relationships and control any situation.

11) Accurate Thinking - Separate real facts from mere information so you can devise definite, practical plans.

12) Concentration - Laser-focus your mind on one subject at a time so the plans you create are plans that will work.

13) Cooperation - Eliminate envy and greed, and learn to apply the Law of the Master Mind in all of your relationships.

14) Profiting by Failure - Train yourself to recognize the difference between failure and what is just a temporary defeat.

15) Tolerance - Eliminate mistrust and doubts so you can reap the rewards that come naturally to accurate thinkers.

16) The Golden Rule - Use this most basic law of life to ensure cooperation from any individual or group.

17) The Universal Law of Cosmic Habitforce - Transform your thoughts and habits so they harmonize with success-consciousness.

One reviewer here remarked that you ought to just skip this entire book set and instead get Think and Grow Rich, however a cursory examination of the table of contents for Law of Success and Think and Grow Rich shows that the latter book covers a slightly different set of topics. Law of Success lays the groundwork for a success mentality whereas Think and Grow Rich spreads into the realm of some specific actions which you ought to undertake. To expand out from there in the realm of modern reality, consult works by, say, Brian Tracy, Jim Rohn, Dale Carnegie, etc.

As for the Law of Success course, the original text appears to be out of copyright protection, having been first published in 1928, so now we see a plethora of publishers performing the old "copyright two-step" where an original public domain work is reprinted in its entirety with a few minor editorial touch-ups here or there, some light editing work done, and/or a modern introduction by the editor. Thereafter, the entire work is re-copyrighted. Hence we see a collection of competing versions of the same original text, some of better quality than others. Any hard copy will run between 1,000 -1,600 pages, so check the page count to ensure you get what you are bargaining for.

As a personal fan of both the science of self-improvement and audiobooks, I recommend against both the BN Publishing edition and the Audible download edition.

The Audible edition is an earlier rendition of the text which contains only 15 original main principles, whereas Mr. Hill gradually expanded his Law of Success central thesis from 15 to 17 over the course of his later life. Additionally, I advise against any Audible product because I cannot in good faith suggest your purchase of any sort of digital media download which contains Digital Rights Management (DRM). With DRM downloads, you run into headaches with playback, copying or burning and ultimately you don't really own the media you paid for.

The BN Publishing edition gives the impression of being extremely poorly executed and the final product leaves a bit to be desired. The two-cd set is well-printed, but the text is an earlier version, the quality of the MP3's sound terrible, and the back cover points to the wrong homepage for the publisher(!).

Therefore, with neither package do you get the "real deal."

The best-quality audiobook of The Law of Success is the High Roads Media edition, which you can buy either from the Napoleon Hill Foundation or here at Amazon. It is a 4-volume unabridged set with some minor editing, some more current examples, and editorial clarifications.

The Law of Success, Volume I: Principles of Self-Mastery
ISBN: 1-932429-06-9

The Law of Success: The Principles of Personal Power, Vol. II
ISBN: 1-932429-08-5

The Law of Success, Volume III: the Principles of Self-Creation
ISBN: 1-932429-10-7

The Law of Success, Volume IV, 75th Anniversary Edition: The Principles of Personal Integrity
ISBN: 1-932429-12-3

This set is a bit more expensive than other audiobook approaches but you get the most exposure to the material for the money. Hard copies of this set are also available and are also strongly recommended.

For myself, I am about halfway through the third volume and the going is great. Already my mind and mentality is beginning to shift towards more success-consciousness. I feel better and my "success instincts" are beginning to sharpen. The content is a bit long-winded and archaic, but very solid and very well-thought out, what with 20 years of active research necessary to produce these insights. I heartily recommend it and it should not be passed over. I wish I had come across this 10 years ago.

OUTSTANDING for REAL WEALTH from the Inside Out that LASTS
By Barbara Rose
This is one of the BEST books (there are two in the set) that I have ever read for what truly creates real and lasting wealth, as well as what prevents people from the same.

The wisdom in this book is timeless, and will definitely show you where you may have been unconsciously blocking abundance in your life, as well as the character beneath to sustain it with a pure conscious.

I could quote this book a thousand times. A few of my favorites are:

"No man has a chance to enjoy permanent success until he begins to look in the mirror for the real cause of all his mistakes."

"Don't be afraid of a little opposition. Remember that the 'Kite' of success generally rises AGAINST the wind of Adversity - not with it!"

"Is it not strange that we fear most that which never happens? That we destroy our initiative by the fear of defeat, when, in reality, defeat is a most useful tonic and should be accepted as such."

"Service, Sacrifice and Self-Control are three words which must be well understood by the person who succeeds in doing something that is of help to this world."

"Charles Chaplin makes a million dollars a year out of a funny, shuffling walk and a pair of baggy trousers, because he does 'something different.' Take the hint and individualize yourself with some distinctive idea."

"E.M. Statler became the most successful hotel man in the world by rendering MORE SERVICE and BETTER SERVICE THAN HIS GUESTS WERE ASKED TO PAY FOR."

There is more in this book of lasting value that can truly make a difference in your life than many get-rich-quick books I've come across. As this great book states, "Conceit is a fog which envelops a man's real character beyond his own recognition. It weakens his native abilities and strengthens all his inconsistencies."

This book really shows you the stuff wealth is made of. It comes from a pure heart, an open mind that values wisdom, and a person who values people more than dollars. Do that, and you'll come to find more dollars than you ever have before.

Along with this book, I recommend "Think and Grow Rich" (shown above) and "Failing Forward" by John C. Maxwell if you're looking for more current examples, though timeless and rewarding.

They ALL deserve 10 stars.

The equalivent of an MBA in personal development
By CyberMan
Like most people I bought Think & Grow Rich along with several other business and positive mind books. A leader in a company that I was associated with suggested The Law of Success. He warned me that it would be a lot of reading. At that time it was two hard back copies, beautifully bound.
I asked him if the books helped him. He told me that this set helped him achieve a level of success that was previously unattainable to him. And he told me that this series was much more complete than Think & Grow Rich---it was like attending class. Transcripts from actual Napolean Hill lectures.
I found that like Rich, these books helped me to go to levels that I could never reach before as well. Think & Grow Rich planted the seeds and got my interest as well as offered powerful strategies. This 2 book set helped make more sense of the principles, tied things together.
The other Hill book that I strongly recommend is Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude. I know that even in todays world, some people bicker at the positive mind books...but guess what? They work! Everyone I know who has achieved any level of success attributes that success to books like these.
I know they sure have helped me.
