If you were successful in the 80s, your instincts may not serve you well
By pbm
In the fall, the grass turns brown. In the spring, the grass turns green.

As a child, when you understand the changing seasons, you'll know which clothes to have ready for chilly mornings in the fall or winter.

What if we discovered that there are `macro-seasons'? Macro-seasons could be longer stretches of time for cycles to occur. What if the cycle was about the same length as a human life? It would be hard for us to see, but once we recognize the pattern, we could better relate to people looking for products and to people finding fulfillment in giving generously to non-profits.

The Pendulum Swings

"Pendulum" by Roy Williams and Michael Drew shows that these `macro seasons' are real. "Pendulum" looks at history and uncovers a predictable swing of public opinion--largely moving from one kind of excess to moderation then to a second excess then back to moderation. With three thousand years of history, the authors show the pendulum's cycle. Better yet, you can find the way to understand what people will desire in the coming days.

I've watched Roy Williams for quite a while and he's had a habit of being right, so I expect him to keep his record intact with what he says in "Pendulum".

Here's a big hint: If you enjoyed success in the 80s, your natural instincts may lead you away from success today--just like pulling out the swimsuit in fall.

Get prepared for the coming change of seasons by reading "Pendulum".

I haven't finished it yet but expect to read it. I heard someone discussing the book/author on a program (I think Glenn Beck's) and it sounded very interesting. I personally believe the theory is correct.

Terrific read to understand macro trends
By Michael Davis, the Speaking MD
In the book Decisive, authors Chip and Dan Heath remind you that predicting the future is not really possible. Pendulum is NOT a book about predicting the future - authors Roy Williams and Michael Drew are clear about this. What it IS is a fascinating look at societal trends over the past three thousand years. The idea that we swing between a pendulum of 'Me' and 'We' focus is not just interesting, it can be valuable in how to create and deliver you messages to the marketplace, how to be ready for a change from a 'Me to We' or a 'We to Me', or understand when either is reaching a peak.

Read this book if you want to better understand the macro forces which shape and drive our society.

Programming in D: Tutorial and Reference, by Ali Cehreli

The main aim of this book is to teach D to readers who are new to computer programming. Although having experience in other programming languages is certainly helpful, this book starts from the basics.

D is a multi-paradigm system programming language that combines a wide range of powerful programming concepts from the lowest to the highest levels. It has C-like syntax and static typing. It pragmatically combines efficiency, control, and modeling power, with safety and programmer productivity in mind.

Each chapter is based on the contents of the previous ones, introducing as few new concepts as possible. It is recommended that the book is read in linear fashion, without skipping chapters if possible.

Although this book was written with beginners in mind, it covers almost all features of D. More experienced programmers can use the book as a D language reference by starting from the index section.

From the foreword:

I've long suspected D is a good first programming language to learn. It exposes its user to a variety of concepts – systems, functional, object oriented, generic, generative – candidly and without pretense. And so does Ali's book, which seems to me an excellent realization of that opportunity. – Andrei Alexandrescu

Blurbs from the back cover:

“D is pristine, clean, immensely powerful, and arguably the actual state-of-the-art programming language. Ali's book is a gem. Clear, concise, and complete.” – Olivier Henley

“I have been using Ali’s online D book to teach D at the university level. It is up-to-date, complete, and most importantly, extremely readable. Having a print version is even better! This is now the 'go-to’ book for learning D programming.” – Chuck Allison, Professor and Chair, Computer Science Department, Utah Valley University

“Ali's explanations are succinct and on target. I like that he provides rationale for why D was designed in a particular way and how I can use it most effectively. This is the best computer language book I've read.” – Robbin Carlson, Luthier and Enterprise Architect

“I taught a CS2 Data Structures class in D with more success and student appreciation than when using either C++ or Java as it's an ideal language to express the relevant concepts at all scales, from detailed to big picture, without needless complexity.

Ali ehreli's tutorial played a central role supporting students especially during the first half of the course — without it the course simply would not have worked, so "many thanks Ali" — and an important part of that is its linearity — it can be read with only backward dependencies. This meant that with hard work even students of little experience and only moderate current abilities could get up to speed, and we saw just that. It is hard to overstate this factor. I unreservedly recommend this book to all.” – Dr. Carl Sturtivant, University of Minnesota Department of Computer Science & Engineering

“This book is one of the best guides through the language that I've seen.” – Andrew Wray, D Enthusiast

“I encourage anyone considering D to read this book. Not exactly 'D for Dummies' but it's easy to follow even if you don't have much experience with compiled languages.” – bachmeier, Reddit user

“Having worked through the book, I have to say this is one of the easiest to follow and distraction free read there is and the fact that it made learning a new language a total breeze really impressed me.” – Imran Khan, Student

One of the better programming books I've read through
By Scott Dean
(The first thing to point out is that this book is available for free as pdf in a link from the dlang.org homepage (http://ddili.org/ders/d.en/index.html). The pdf and book appear to be identical. I dislike reading books/tutorials from a pdf since I'll copy and paste the example code and exercises, which isn't conducive to learning... Plus, having a good looking hardcopy is always nice.)

The book is great. It may even be a good book for learning programming in general (especially C-like languages), if you don't have any coding experience. The entire book gives very concise statements and examples for each idea. Even the chapters themselves are short and to-the-point. The author doesn't try to be sarcastic or witty. It's a proper tutorial for idiomatic D.

Though it's probably a reasonable reference book for D, if you already have a good handle on the language or have a lot of experience with C++, the book does build in a linear fashion. Since most of my previous experience is in python, skipping chapters made me feel lost... so read chapters in order. (The author even says this in the preface.)

Review
Science Blogs: Built on Facts
“[A] charming and erudite instance of a genre with very few members — a pop-physics book with partial differential equations on a good fraction of the pages.... More impressive still is that the book entirely resists the temptation to skip to the good stuff — quantum mechanics and so on. This is a book which is purely about classical mechanics.... [S]ucceeds admirably in its goal. It presents classical mechanics in all its glory, from forces to Hamiltonians to symmetry and conservation laws, in a casual but detailed style.”

Scientific American's Cocktail Party Physics blog
“It's clear, insightful, and designed for those hardcore physics fans who've read all the popular treatments and now might be interested in moving out of the armchair into the real action of actually engaging in theoretical physics.”

Physics World
“Very readable. Abstract concepts are well explained....[The Theoretical Minimum] provide[s] a clear description of advanced classical physics concepts, and gives readers who want a challenge the opportunity to exercise their brain in new ways.”

Home Education Magazine
“In combination with the online lectures, The Theoretical Minimum provides the student who is proficient in algebra, trigonometry and calculus a thorough introduction to theoretical physics.”

Wall Street Journal, Best Books of 2013
“Every minute of our lives is now dependent on technology, yet the wonders of basic science are foreign to many of us. Everyone who remembers even a bit of math should read this inviting and accessible account of ‘what you need to know to start doing physics.'”

Wall Street Journal
“So what do you do if you enjoyed science at school or college but ended up with a different career and are still wondering what makes the universe tick?.... Leonard Susskind and George Hrabovsky's The Theoretical Minimum is the book for you. In this neat little book the authors aim to provide the minimum amount of knowledge you need about classical physics...to gain some real understanding of the world.... They do so with great success…. Along the way you get beautifully clear explanations of famously ‘difficult' things like differential and integral calculus, conservation laws and what physicists mean by symmetries.... Messrs. Susskind and Hrabovsky's book is a powerful exposition of why science is ‘real' and a counter to the kind of wishful thinking employed by people who, for whatever reason, reject the scientific worldview.”

About the Author

REALLY up to date coverage of key topics in a thin volume
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
This 220 page 6 x 8.5 little text is packed with valuable nuggets, and does NOT shy away from advanced math. This book is based on the popular Stanford, online and YouTube "adult ed" lectures and is targeted at scientists and "amateurs" who missed physics in undergrad but are still interested.

NOT a "popular" physics book with a bunch of fluffy, non substantial speculation about membranes, stings, fractals, superpositioned states and multiple universes! Has real, tough, solid content with a LOT of advanced formulas, including tensors and many partial derivatives. You CAN "get" these with supplemental study, but the pace of the 11 lectures included is fast enough to leave you behind very quickly if you're rusty in math.

I teach ordinary differential equations to non engineers at classpros dot com, including Psychologists interested in the latest progress in nonlinear dynamical systems as applied to neurons, behavior, etc. This book is a real GEM as an intro to those topics, without "dumbing down" the content for a "lay" audience.

If you love reading populist texts on quantum physics, etc. this wonderful book will take you all the way from classic upwards, with the requisite math, and will provide a great foundation for really getting what's going on in the more advanced areas. Unfortunately, the math will scare lots of folks off, but please, don't be one of them!

The 11 lectures included are: 1. Classical Physics, 2. Motion, 3. Dynamics, 4. Multiple Particle Systems, 5. Energy, 6. Least Action Principle, 7. Symmetries and Conservation, 8. Hamiltonian Mechanics, 9. Phase Space Fluid and Gibbs-Liouville, 10. Poisson Brackets, Angular Momentum, Symmetries, 11. Electric and Magnetic Forces.

There also is an appendix on Central Forces and Planetary Orbits and "math interludes" on Trig, Vectors, Integrals and PDE's. NOTE that only classical mechanics are covered here, HOWEVER circular motion and momentum are covered, and if you've seen the "Feynman" approach to QED (QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter), you know that even advanced Physics grad students were astonished that Richard was able to use "clock metaphors" and circular momentum to explain Quantum math and mechanics that normally take a grad student 3 years to master!

Nothing is covered in a LOT of depth, for example there's little on computational complexity, but the theory of information conservation is touched on briefly as the "most fundamental of all physical laws" -- the cyclic "memory" of where we start and end!

The REALLY COOL thing is that the authors don't talk down to us, they assume that just as "amateurs" can discover new stars in Astronomy, non-college types can also make great new contributions in Physics! No fooling, no tongue in cheek. Seems like a revolutionary view from Stanford types, but perhaps they've seen the future of distributed, non-brick and mortar education for real! At under 20 bucks this is a MUST HAVE even for HS students in my humble opinion. GREAT GIFT for a bright grandchild for their 18th birthday as well! This is such an original math refresher too, that I'm guessing a lot of folks will also use it to brush up on applied math. By page 60 we're already at differential equations-- so hang on to your saddle!

Lots of errors
By Alan Watson
I majored in humanities but I'm interested in math and science, and I find this book both challenging and rewarding. But as I worked through it I found a number of things that looked wrong. Eventually I Googled the book's web site and found an Errata file that I downloaded. It identified 58 errors, most of them in equations and many of them significant enough to thoroughly befuddle a careful reader who trusted the book as written. That's an appalling number of errors. Somebody at Basic Books ought to be looking for a new job. I recommend the book if you are interested and willing to read carefully, but if you can't wait for a second, corrected printing be sure to download the Errata before you dig in!

Not as advertised.
By J. Marlin
This book perhaps needs to be advertised as "what you need to know to start doing physics on a graduate level" rather than "to start doing physics." I say that because I earned A's in three terms of physics in college at a very good STEM school (from which I received an engineering degree) and we never used Lagrangian math or computed Hamiltonians. My son is currently enrolled in an EE program at a university highly reputed for its STEM programs and in his three terms of physics he also was never exposed to these. The STEM faculty where I currently teach doesn't introduce undergraduates to these methods, either.

If the book's intended audience are those who missed out on college physics, then it is not a sensible starting place as it jumps immediately into abstract concepts and complicated mathematics without sufficient grounding in physical examples that would give some context to the abstractions. Further, the book introduces a plethora of unfamiliar terms and symbols but provides no glossary of these for ready reference as one moves ahead in the text. And overall, I think the book moves too quickly for it to be effective even for the intelligent reader who isn't trained in science or mathematics. I have the math background to follow everything Susskind does here, but I found the pace to be breakneck.

That said, I'm glad I read this book and hope to study it again in the upcoming year. The kinds of maths Susskind presents are really very powerful and useful, and I enjoyed the intellectual challenge of tackling this text. It made my head hurt in a good way; perhaps another go will do the trick.
